Rodriguez is one of only three players in the history of the Florida Metro Conference to score 2,000 career points, along with former Memphis Tiger Darius Washington and New Orleans Hornets guard Austin Rivers, according to ScarberryMedia.com. In four years at East River High, Rodriguez averaged 20.2 points and 9.5 rebounds despite only having played basketball for six years.

“He is a scoring machine,” Carlos Morales, Rodriguez’s AAU coach, told SNY.tv. “He has a very long wingspan, which makes him a good rebounder. He has 950+ career rebounds.”

Rodriguez has flown under the radar somewhat because he played with the Puerto Rican 18U National Team last summer.

“He missed out on some open periods because of playing internationally,” Morales said.

He initially committed to Air Force Prep with the intention of going Division 1 in 2014, but could now suit up for a college in 2013.

“I feel like I would be a scoring-type player,” Rodriguez told SNY.tv.

LAVIN CALLS RODRIGUEZ

Prior to the trip, Lavin called 2014 Puerto Rican wing Wilfredo Rodriguez to express interest, his AAU coach, Carlos Morales, told SNY.tv.

“They want him to visit in September and for Midnight Madness in October,” Morales said.

As for Rodriguez’s upside, Morales added: “Wilfredo is a 6-6 small forward with a 6-10 wingspan who can flat out score. At times you don’t even notice him on the floor and when you look at the stat sheet you see he finished with 20+ points. He has a great feel for the game.”

Rodriguez also holds offers from Delaware and Stony Brook. He will prep this year at Cheshire (Conn.) Academy.

Coach Lavin has proven to be an excellent recruiter to date at St John's
But, I have to say, it doesn't give me chills up and down my spine to see us competing with the likes of Delaware and Stony Brook for a recruit

Great, another Tom Konchalski in the making I see. How do you like his hedge and recover off of ball screens?

The piece below is from a year ago....

A big time sleeper inside of the class of 2013 is Wilfredo Rodriguez. Rodriguez is a slim 6’6 forward with a knack for scoring the basketball. We saw that first hand a couple weeks ago at the Travel Team Jamboree where he led D12 Warriors to two big wins against highly touted Florida Rams and E1T1 South. Hitting the three ball, getting out on the break and scoring in transition, beating his man off the dribble, Rodriguez had it rolling!

Playing in the Florida 8A division, the toughest in the Sunshine State, Orlando East River’s Wilfredo Rodriguez has had a brilliant career. Rodriguez is one of three players in Florida Metro Conference history to score 2000 career points, joining former Memphis Tiger Darius Washington and New Orleans Hornets guard Austin Rivers. In four seasons at East River, Rodriguez averaged close to a double-double, putting up 20.2 points and 9.5 rebounds-per-game in ’12-’13 alone, leading the Falcons in nearly every statistical category. For his career, Rodriguez shot 62 percent from the field. In an era where top prospects leave their high schools to play at better programs and private prep academies, Rodriguez stayed loyal to his teammates and coaches, finishing his career as an East River Falcon.

Wilfredo is a scoring machine that can score at will from the wing position. Rodriguez has lots of versatility with his skill set, and his 6-foot-6 frame, complimented by a 6-foot-9 wingspan allows him to rebound with bigger players. In a road game at Cypress Creek (FL) on Dec. 12, Rodriguez had his best game of the season, shooting 12-of-18 from the field in a 28-point, 16-rebound, 4-assist, and 4-block performance. Like many high school players making the transition to college basketball, Rodriguez will need to get stronger, but his biggest attribute that opposing coaches and players have noted in his career is the forward’s ability to “get buckets.”

Rodriguez scored a career-high 48 points during his sophomore year, and in the AAU circuit, he’s scored as many as 38 points in a single game. The forward can slash and dash at will, but can also perform equally well as a spot-up shooter from any spot on the floor. In the Adidas Hoops Challenge championship game vs. TNBA Elite in Akron, Ohio two weeks ago, Rodriguez put on a show, scoring 24 points and pulling down 12 rebounds in M.o.a.M’s victory.

On the high school scene and AAU circuit, Rodriguez has shown an ability to play with teams of different dynamics. Although Willie’s high school team had an 11-17 record this past season, Rodriguez flawlessly transitioned onto an M.o.a.M. squad with several Division I prospects, proving that Rodriguez is more than just a “gunner.” In the last year alone, Wilfredo has proven over and over again that he can be “the man” along with playing team ball on a talented unit.

We may need a few bigs. Sanchez & GG are seniors and Sampson & Obekpa are borderline NBA prospects at this point. A big year from either of them and they could jump to the pros.

Commits to Binghampton.

This is the kind of recruit I'd have no problems taking a flier on because at least you know you're getting someone who is technically sound rather than chasing another athlete.

It is Binghamton!

Awesome news. The program has been struggling since they made the NCAA's a few years ago. Ran into a whole lot of problems. They have a beautiful arena for a low division 1 program. Attendance is pretty good.
