Why St. John's players have so many problems?

1. Rysheed Jordan : He was to transfer to another school. He has been in and out so many times.
2. Harrison : He had problems with Lavin.
3. Obekpa : He was to leave St. John's.
4. Sampson (last year) : He left.
5. De La Rosa : Academic problem.
6. Keith Thomas : Academic problem.

St. John's looks like a Company, not a University.

You think this is bad? Please pal, I urge you to do some research on every other school in the top 100. Quit digging for nothing and pushing an anti-coach agenda

I can only imagine what you guys would be like if you were fans of Oregon after last season.

This kinda stuff happens all over the country, we just don't hear about it or care about it like we do with this team. It could also be because most coaches don't discipline their players or make their kids go to class.

I went to St. John's in late 1980's. I had never seen these problems at that time under Lou's era.

The climate of college basketball has changed significantly. Plus, if you didn't see anything then, you weren't looking hard enough. I could tell you some stories I've heard.

Right and if their were message boards back then they would be killing Looie for being a lazy SOB.
Case in point rescinding Gary Payton's scholly because he did not want to deal with the playing time issues between the other guards he signed (Broadnax and Lewis) who left anyway.

Great thread. I've always maintained that we should be recruiting the kids from Sacred heart HS in Hempstead. All very bright, nice girls. We are just recruiting the wrong types.

Late 80s? For reals?

Gather round kids and let's remember when:

- Lou's starting back court failed out of school (Boo, Porter)
--His starting center (Baldi) was thrown out of college basketball.
-His best recruit (Moses Scurry) goes Prop 48, transfers to UNLV and earns a national title,
-His best player (Jayson) attacks a fan in the stands.
-He fails to sign a kid who desperately wanted to come here (Payton) and who is on his way to Springfield
-He instead signs two other guards (Lewis, Brodnax) who transfer out.
-And he misses out almost entirely (Shawnelle Scott, aside) on what was historically the deepest, most talented NYC class ever - '89-'90.

Other than that everything was okee-dokee.

Minor, trivial stuff.

You want problems with a basketball program? Try Baylor 2003. Player murders team-mate, coach cover-up, drugs, illegal payments... Even hookers in Pittsburgh can't top the Waco fiasco.

What about UNC? We are DII compared to that debacle.

Louie lived and recruited in a local bubble . Kid wanted to stay home and he got good ones and a few great ones Tomes have changed .Players expectations have changed The business and it is a business have changed.
If Joran does not want to play for us I can live with it a talent will raise his head for us this yr

Yet he still managed to have the team ranked the top twenty at some point during the year every single year from 75-76 till he retired 91-92, with the only exception being 88-89 when he won the NIT Championship. All on a shoestring budget. Boo failed out of school and Baldi was thrown out of college basketball?

It isn't the 1980s anymore. College basketball is now BIG business. The NBA is now even bigger business. You just cannot compare things to the past, especially in college basketball.

Today there are much more outlets for info, more cable tv channels, internet, blogs, forums etc. That said there is an excess under the Lavin tenure and what's worse is if he is going to recruit such shady recruits ,he should have competent backups. 2011 we were barely able to field a team. Now we don't have a backup that we can really feel is productive out there.
