Why St. John's is truly New York's team

Just got back from mass a little while ago. The gospel was about Jesus driving out demons.

Father Tom began his homily by announcing that today is super Sunday, but for st. John's fans, they had their Super Saturday yesterday. He went on to say that yesterday it was St. John's driving out demons, the Blue Demons of Duke, and the demons of a 10 game losing streak. When half the homily was about our team, I could be alright with him missing by one the 0-11 streak.

Father Tom gets a pass. He went to st. John's, graduating in 76. When he announced the outcome there was rousing applause. Less than 10 miles from the sju campus, he correctly identified that so many of us went to st johns.

Then I went to the supermarket where the chatter on the lines was all about the game.

I'd be pretty sure that these were scenes repeating around the city over the past 24 hours.

Does Syracuse honestly believe that the grip st johns has around nyc where there is much benign and active love for our guys exists at all? OF COURSE NOT.

Funny thing as our fans sing the praises of our guys. At best, support on here for them has been no more than 50-50 and maybe a lot less. We played a bunch of 2 possession or less losses, and yesterday we were one three point shot and 2 seconds from heading to overtime and perhaps another loss.

Winning always beats losing, and beating Duke almost always beats winning against anyone else. When Hardy took over the big east for 10 games, new York woke up. Today after just one huge win, new York woke up again.

At the end of the NR regime almost all younger fans around the country knew who we were, and wearing st. John's gear was almost embarrassing. Today, there is a lot of pride, and a lot of joy, and a strengthened belief that Chris is a steady hand at the helm.

New York's team. Sounds good. Let's win a bunch more and get ready for next season

Love those "We Are New York's Team" warm-up jerseys the team was wearing (and which NYCRedmen nicely caught in his game-day photos).

Well said Beast. Both my sons also called me from Florida, where they live, to congratulate me on the win. And both are huge St. John's fans! So I can verify that there's at least one other place besides the NYC Metro Arewa where St. John's was the topic of the day!

Extremely proud of our guys.

Are these for sale??

I had tickets to the Montreal Canadians game yesterday afternoon against the Anaheim Ducks. It was a fantastic game but I had a difficult time watching once I saw that we were close. When we took the lead I stopped watching the game and was glued to my phone and I thank everyone who provided updates. I got a call from a friend in west palm beach and from my son in London Ontario, who were thrilled with the win.
When SJU wins a lot of people are happy everywhere. And winning a BE game would be nice but you beat Duke and everyone takes notice.

I assume you go to St. Anne's Church in Garden City - I was at that MASS.

Yep. Wasn't that awesome?

It was fantastic.

I went to the 11am Mass at St. Agnes in Rockville Centre. Bishop Brennan also gave us some good pub to the applause of those in attendance. He said he and Bishop Barres together with a couple of priests were at the game and when we won they pumped their fists in victory. This was mentioned in the Daily News story on the game. After Mass, as he was processing up the isle, he noticed my StJ hat in my hand and shot me a big smile and came over to me and I thought he wanted to bump chests. He didn't but said, "What a game."

Here's a timely, related video interview with AD Goff on the subject

So I go to burgerolgy in huntington tonight to get take out. I'm wearing my sju hat. Its a family place. The chef walks over to me and says " hell yeah huge win over Duke at MSG " about 10 minutes later a father is sitting with his 2 kids eating sundaes at the bar and telling them hey you know st johns at a huge win saturday at madison square garden. The youngest said " where is that " the kid was maybe 5. The father said " that's the best place in the world to play basketball "

And that's why we need to play at MSG

That 5 year old kid that good a prospect huh? ;) :)

...and why it’s critical to win games...it attracts ‘approval’, attention, and fans.

Keep in mind that perhaps the biggest reason we've played Duke. Syracuse, and Villanova at the Garden is that THEIR fans fill the house. Our fans have a hard time filling less than 6000 seats at CA, which we haven't done since the providence game. 10k is break even at the garden and without opposing fans, we can't do it alone right now.

Against Xavier, the number 6 team in the country, the upper section was largely empty and plenty of empty seats below.

When our fans start supporting the team in sufficient numbers we can play who we want whete we want.

Maybe they need to give away hundreds of tix to games at CA. Our home arena should always be full.

It would be nice if we could purchase some billboard space at Yankee Stadium as Syracuse and Rutgers have done and then say WE ARE NEW YORKS TEAM.

I have a thin black Columbia jacket with a red StJ logo on the right chest. Last week, a guy asked me if it was for San Jose. Not kidding. This week, a number of people stopped me to congratulate me for the team’s big win. Same jacket. It’s a nice feeling, especially after the Butler game. Personally, I would love to take care of business in conference, but for the pure marketing value to the University, it needs to take advantage of every nationally televised audience against one of the power conferences and make it count with an entertaining victory. I consider the ACC and ESPN to be an adversary to a successful Big East Conference, and our school needs to do its part for ourselves and the conference. For now, this win, like the ones against Syracuse, just feel better than Marquette or DePaul, no offense to those proud programs.
