No Hope has a question for everyone. No Hope was reading the paper today and there was a story today. In the article a few so called experts voiced the opinion that everyone either over rated SJU this year or the coachingstaff has not pulled out of the team what was needed. They said that we had very good athletes but not great ball players. What do you guys think. As a fan I think we always over rate our team hoping they will be good but then the so called experts start turningon us and backing off what they said early in the year it seems to me that the heat will start hitting home on Hollywood. I guess the good and bad for us or Hollywood is that SJU is now far down the totem pole of NYC sports so is it
1) Poor Coaching
2) Talent under performing
3) Talent over rated
4) SJU is jinxed

St. John’s fans may want to readjust their expectations.
Sixteen games into a season that began with NCAA Tournament buzz, the Red Storm are a middling 9-7 and an even more disappointing 0-4 in the Big East.
“I think they’re an NIT team,” CBS Sports college basketball analyst Doug Gottlieb told The Post. “We overrated them or Steve [Lavin] hasn’t done a good enough job, or we undervalued the importance of having more experience at the point-guard spot.
“It’s been a disappointment. I picked them to win the league, and there’s no shot they win the league.”
Gottlieb said a variety of issues have hurt the Johnnies, from the slower-than-expected development of highly rated freshman point guard Rysheed Jordan, to the new group’s inability to mesh quickly, to a difficult schedule that has included three of the top six teams in the country: No. 2 Syracuse, No. 4 Wisconsin and No. 6 Villanova.
Jordan’s play has picked up of late, and he had 16 points, six rebounds and four assists in a loss to DePaul on Tuesday, but also six turnovers. St. John’s has faltered down the stretch in three of its losses, including the setback to DePaul, when the Johnnies managed just one point over the final 4:35, coughing up a four-point lead.
“I don’t think you have a great decision-maker,” ESPN analyst Seth Greenberg said. “A guy who will facilitate and make a play when the opportunity presents itself, that has the trust of his teammates.”
Lavin has raved about his team’s depth from the outset, often using as many as 11 different players and eight different starting lineups. But that may not be a positive, CBS Sports Network analyst Steve Lappas said.
“For me, personally, I’ve never been a fan of playing that many guys,” Lappas, the former Villanova and Manhattan coach, said.
During the preseason a number of experts said St. John’s had arguably the most talent in the Big East. The Storm had the most players of any team in the Big East honored during the preseason (four), but that has come into question also.
“What’s talent? Is talent athleticism or is talent basketball skill?” Gottlieb said. “Athletically, they look very, very good when they go through layup lines, but how many of their guys can really, really play?” Gottlieb asked. “We rated their athleticism, not their basketball acumen.”
All hope is not lost.
On Thursday, St. John’s begins a three-game homestand at Carnesecca Arena, where it is a perfect 6-0, against shorthanded Providence, and three of the Johnnies’ four Big East games have come on the road. The Red Storm have the 12th-toughest schedule in the country and an RPI of 71. But to get to 20 wins by the time of the Big East Tournament, St. John’s would have to go 11-4 the rest of the way, and the schedule includes road games against ranked teams Villanova and Creighton, and a trip to Milwaukee to face Marquette.
“I thought they were a team at this point that would be knocking on the door of the tournament as opposed to now they have their work cut out for them,” Lappas said. “There’s no question they’re behind the eight ball.”

I think:
1) We WERE overrated if the expectation was that we would easily secure an NCAA bid and go deep into the tournament.
2) That writers are no smarter at knowing basketball than most of us. They are reacting based on a shaky start, based on the last 4 games, collectively not an easy way to start the season. Most can construct a sentence and communicate a thought, except if you work for Newsday.

Neil Best used to be good when he covered the Johnnie's for Newsday.

5 games into conference play last year we had:

-Won against #14 ranked Cincy on the road
-Won against #20 ranked ND at MSG.

We had the exact same roster of “athletes” (except Garrett) PLUS we have now added Sanchez, Hooper and Jordan.

The wild rotations, the starting of the walk-ons, Lavin’s bizarre obsession with Phil Greene.

This is a coaching problem.

I think that it is a combo of all 4 areas that you list, with particular emphasis on # 1 and #3. Some of the coaching moves that have been made (or not made) are baffling. It has been documented ad naseum on this site, so I won't repeat them...but one really sticks in my craw. You have what is alleged to be, the deepest team in the Big East. Filled with "great athletes". Why are we playing so passively on defense? Why are we not wearing teams down? Tonight will be a great example. We get a very shorthanded Providence team. There is no excuse at all for not pressing them from the time they leave the locker room. From an offensive standpoint...we are equally lost. The perfect example was having Sanchez chuck up a 3 pointer during crunch time at DePaul, coming off of a time out.
Regarding the talent. Too great of an emphasis has been placed on measureables, and not enough on basic skill. Give me the kid with a 40 inch vertical jumping ability, as oppossed to 46 inches, if he can understand the concept of ball movement and spacing, and most importantly, can shoot.
Give me the kid that is willing to put in the time in the gym to make himself stronger over the summer, realizing that defenses adjust (at least good ones adjust) and will take away your strengths and expose your weaknesses. Without totally slamming the kid, one needs to only look at Sampson. Rookie of the year. Talk (by some) of a future in the NBA. However a kid with 2 massive holes in his game. 1) Understanding of offense philosophy and 2) a body that needs serious time in the weight room. Coaches adjusted to him and realized that it is very easy to push him out of his favorite spots on the floor. We have many examples of the same thing. Pointer? The answer is simple. Play tight on everyone else and allow the guy playing him to cheat on defense. Knowing that the odds of his making a jumpshot are miniscule. Sanchez? Hey, if he wants to play 30 feet from the basket...let him. He effectively neutralizes himself. And so on, and so on.
Which again leads to coaching. If I can figure this stuff out...why can't our head coach? And why can't he make adjustments to compensate? The best coaching move that he has made all season was putting in Gift last game. Think about that...

Patience, only 15 days until the "Surge".

Thats Funny. it also happens to be only 15 days until February. :)

Didnt you hear?
Lavins crystal ball recently told him it will now be march when the pixie dust begins to kick in and magically transforms the team into a quality squad.

Lavin under heavy incoming fire from the ESPN Crew.. It will get worse if the wins don't start tonite. His immunity from criticism is lessening from the outside world.

Of course, here he's been a target since the season began. Rightly so.
