Why is Gene So Mean and other deep thoughts

I started to hijack a thread in response to some comments about a member in the post game thread and then thought better of it so just for fun I'll add my thoughts here in the Players Lounge.

As you might imagine, running redmen.com can be stressful. Doing it for over 20 years is the sign of a deranged mind.

Along with turning on end users webcams I have developed various coping mechanisms and tools to amuse myself as the administrator of redmen.com For example, I have assigned and think of, movie characters to various members. For example, one of our regulars is "Street Preacher" (Dolph Lundgren character in the Keanu Reeves movie Johnny Mnemonic.) Another is "Boogie Nights"... "Bilbo Baggins"... and of course "Taxi Driver" aka "Travis Bickle"... and there is also a demon possessed dog named "Harvey" that posts here way too much... Even once would be too much right?

I get to wondering about certain redmen.com mysteries over the years, such as why a particular member chose the handle they did. You can't imagine how off the wall delighted I was when one of the members clarified that his handle was because he was a "CPA" named Vin, not a particular fan of Corey PAvin... MYSTERY SOLVED!!! Another of those mysteries is "why is Gene, so mean?"

Some have complained recently about poor Gene. It probably went unnoticed but I even chimed in a few games back and just said "It is part of his process" I have gotten used to Mean Gene posting that the sky has fallen a few minutes into a game thread. It is SOP on redmen.com! He's a fixture!

In a weird way I kind of look forward to it. Regardless of the score, when he doesn't post for like 10 or 15 minutes in, I start getting anxious like something is off with the world. When I see him posting with happy thoughts at the end of a game it is like a reward and I even feel relief for him. It is sort of shared neurotic empathy of fandom... I know, twisted ;)

I was just kidding about the webcams, of course... Also thank you to austour for explaining the Australian connection and years ago room112 explaining that one... GoldenLeaf enlightening me (way too many years ago) to our shared love and mjmaherjr for clarifying that he doesn't like his name pronounced "mayer". I used to wonder if otis worked with elevators. I know he doesn't but still don't know what that is about. When Knight first started on the site I wondered what that was about. Rutgers fan, Knight of Colombus... how do I take "coaster" like the thing on a bar that I put my beer on? part time NY/CA ? what's a "sirvoo" ? What happened in Marillac Hall to make him so angry? Is terricboss really that terrific and if so is he hiring? Is Jack WIlliams realfan? (no forget that one) Is usguard realfan...? uscongress? What channel do I catch weathermannyc on? What were the nights like in Chicago? Sherman, Sheridan and Grant - why those three? and a few that will probably never get solved like "why is duke grad/st. john's fan "purple", purple? is that from mixing blue and red?" I'm just getting started...
many of life’s great mysteries in this thread. So many unanswered questions I’m really curious for some of the answers too. I’ll say this about one of yours in regards to Weatherman. While he’s not on a specific tv channel my buddy flat out knows his weather better than every single person I’ve ever seen on tv. In the winter I don’t even bother looking at the news if a storm is coming and I just text him to see if I should plan on driving to work or not. When Weatherman tells me don’t drive I don’t drive. Last week it was sunny to partly cloudy in Garden City and he is texting me at 1 or so that I need to go home early because about to get white out snow for an hour right around the stock market close. 330 I’m driving home and it starts getting windy by 4pm I couldn’t see 50 feet in front of me but I just pulled on my street. He’s like the Weatherdamus

I try to avoid posting most of the time when I am that drunk

Thanks for your work, Paul. I don't think many people on here truly grasp the amount of time, energy and work that goes into administering a forum of this magnitude. It's not easy. Thank you.

I started posting in high school on Big East Briefs and didn’t know anything about the St. John’s campus. I was somewhat jealous of people that had handles that were connected to the school, because I loved the program so much and wanted to attend since I was a kid.

When I transferred into St. John’s my sophomore year I signed up for RM.com and Marillac Hall seemed like one of the most iconic buildings on campus and sure beat where I actually spent my time in college: Mongtoris, the University Center, Gantry’s, Traditions, and (mostly) my gf’s dorm in Ithaca, NY.

Me too but it has been a while since I participated. Originally was a member of the Heart of the Island council from Suffolk cty. early 90s

That's funny about Otis. Everytime I get into an elevator and see its an Otis branded one, I always think of the poster. It's so weird how that works subconsciously. Otis use to piss me off during the Lavin years, so I would literally get annoyed when I'd get on an Otis elevator.

So you and I probably can't be appointed to the SCOTUS.
