Which Lavin Recruit Has Let You Down The Most?

A lot of hope after Lavin's first recruiting class. Which player has disappointed you the most? The well hyped first class included Garrett (transfer), Pelle (D League) Harkless (NBA). There is Harrison and Greene, who are pretty much what I expected. Not disappointed there. That leaves Sampson, Gift and Pointer from year 1, and Obekpa and Jordan from years 2 and 3. Sanchez counts as well. Jordan has shown flashes of great talent, and is dealing with personal issues and growing pains. He is eliminated. Gift is out, too, as his limitations were exposed early on. I like Obekpa's game. That leaves Sampson, Sanchez and Dom to fight it out as most disappointing. Can't say I expected huge things out of a guy that didn't put up big numbers in junior college. Sanchez is therefore out. It's a battle between Sampson and Dom. Got to give it to Dom. An unbelievable athlete who seems to be no better now than as a freshman. I would lock him in the gym for 2 hours after practice with Hooper and not let him out until he drains 500 3's. All the athleticism in the world, and can't throw the ball in the ocean from more than 8 feet away. How can a guy play basketball for hours upon hours every day for most of his life and shoot the ball so poorly from outside? Amazing.

Here is Dom's scouting report from a few years ago according to espn:

"Strengths:
Pointer is a terrific athlete and an excellent finisher in transition and when he attacks the basket in the half court. Pointer must be boxed out on the offensive glass because he is a tip dunk threat. Pointer can also hit mid range pull up jumpers and three's with needed time and space. He competes and plays with toughness on both ends as well and has the ability to defend all three perimeter positions.

Weaknesses:
Pointer must work on his scoring moves off the dribble from the wing although he can power drive through contact. Also continue to work on being a more consistent perimeter shooter and handling the ball under intense pressure.

Bottom Line:
Pointer is a tough physical competitor that can score, defend and offensive rebound. He is a terrific perimeter defender and as he continues to hone his skills this great athlete's game will go to the next level.

He is exactly who his scouting report says he is. We got exactly what we were expecting to get. I don't get how that is a disappointment..

I have to agree, it would be Pointer! He has not improved at all in the three years he has been at SJU. I would use him on a limited basis and not as a starter. It's unfortunate because I think he is a great kid and a team player. During warm ups with nobody in his face he can't hit a jump shot. If I am not mistaken, he was our highest rated recruit in that class!

Can he hit an uncontested 3 with time and space? How about an uncontested 12 footer? No and no. Has he honed his skills and brought himself to the next level? No and no. Is he a good offensive rebounder? No. He is a good finisher and a decent defender. He is not a lockdown defender. He plays with great energy and can finish. He has not improved his dribble drive and not improved his perimeter game. We got what we recruited 3 years ago, a teenager with great promise. We now have a 20 or 21 year old man with decreasing production in his junior year. His athleticism is sick. NBA level without a doubt. Just think he hasn't improved.

Nurideen Lindsey.

Recall that many of the posters on this site predicted stardom for "talented" Nurideen Lindsey and were concerned that he was headed to the NBA as a "one and done" only to have him quit the StJohn's team during his first semester and transfer to powerhouse Rider College and into obscurity.

Gift. He was a JC AA. I love his character, but I do not think he is that skilled as a BB player. Re;Dom, he has been off lately but has also had great games and is a very good defender.

There is an error in the other topic "Which Lavin Recruit Has Let You Down The Most?"
