Where was the 40 minutes of hell all season?

Why did it take coach half a season to go with the 40 minutes of hell?  Its really bizarre.

I was thinking that in order to get Champy to return, we promised him we would run a pro style offense/defense to showcase him for the nba.  And after Sat and our season slipping away, coach had to tell him im pulling the plug on that.  And Champy probably agreed with him.

Why else would coach not have this team play the way they have since he got here?

If i had to guess, i think the offensive struggles that our newcomers experienced resulted in him shortening the rotation which limits ability to go 40 minutes of hell. At this point, we have no choice but to see what these other guys can do.

Kudos to the kids, they responded and played very hard.

CMA isn't going to change what he does or promise a player he'll change his system if he returns, he's had much better players than Julian... Portis, Gafford, Carroll, etc.

Also, he answered the question at the press conference, he's able to trust his bench more now.  If you remember, outside of Champ, Posh, Mathis, and Wusu, everybody else at the beginning of the season was wildly inconsistent.  So, he has to play all those guys 30 minutes a game, so you can't press all games because you will tire your core guys down.  We can go back to posts where we're asking why Wheeler, Soriano, Smith, Coburn, Nyiwe and so on are in the game.

Now these same guys are starting to learn and you can trust them on the floor for longer stretches and you can run 40 minutes of hell.  They've tried at times this year, but lots of missed assignments and they gave up a ton of layups and open 3's, so he's had to go back to the basics.  Honestly today was by far the best they've looked on defense all year long.  People talk about CMA's system being dated and doesn't work anymore, but when you get 10-12 guys that buy in and actually play it the correct way like they did tonight, it's a thing of beauty to watch, and it's hard to beat.  If you only have 4 or 5 guys that know how to do it, it looks terrible like it has most of the season.

Last night was less about WHAT they did and more about HOW they did it.

The team played balls to the wall from the jump to the buzzer.

The guards get all the shine in a pressure defense, but much like Kim K, it’s only as good as it’s backside. Can you provide a second level of defense, protect the rim, and most importantly close out possessions? Without it yours guards are left alone on an island. I think coaches confidence in all the bigs allowed him to unleash his guards and turn them loose.

100%.  Anderson has always tried to have a guy on the back end who can be an eraser if the other team breaks the press.  As Willard pointed out, he got that from Soriano and Wheeler in the second Hall game and he also got valuable minutes out of Stanley and Nyiwe.  Don't think he has the exact guy he'd want for that job, but he has enough pieces to make it work when they come to play.
