Years after moving from the NY area, I still closely follow SJU hoops and all I can say is, thank God for the NY Post. Unless I’m missing something, I never seem to be able to find coverage of our team in the NY Daily News. It wasn’t like that years ago when I worked in Manhattan and would read the sports pages of both the Post and News over lunch. But in the last 15 to 20 years, the News has treated St. John’s like they don’t exist. Anyone know why we get piss poor coverage in the News?

The Daily News readership has dried up, their website is wonky compared to the NY Post.I hate to get into politics but when they went more left of center like 8 years ago they lost heavy readership. I also believe they went through a couple of owners over the last few years. Definitely not NY’s hometown paper like it was in the 1980s/1990s plus the whole print newspaper/magazine industry is not what it used to be, it’s a dying industry.

The only reason the NY Post exists and still has a decent-sized staff is that it is heavily subsidized by other more profitable News Corp properties like Fox News.
It’s still Rupert Murdoch’s baby - his first big entry to the American market. I suspect that when he goes, the Post will be in jeopardy.

multiple Private Equity ownership changes/debacles and the biggest cut backs in the industry, have left the Daily News with little real content, and no one to cover anything including sports, even the local pro teams, let alone college teams.
And the NYT would rather have a 5 column article about Australian soccer, or high school basketball on native American reservations in New Mexico, than cover the Johnnies or even our local pro teams.
The only local sports print media is the NYPost (for Long Islanders maybe Newsday--nothing good out in Jersey), and the Post does a good job covering the Johnnies.
