Walkons playing time

What are the chances that maybe we start giving the walkons some playing time? Not significant playing time, but maybe just a minute or two here and there. This would give our regular players some much needed rest throughout the game. If there were 3 or 4 other regular players still on the floor, there may not even be that much of a difference.

And in a game like yesterday where we were getting killed inside, why not throw in a 6'8 Sam Sealy to maybe try to get some boards or disrupt them.....

No offense to the two posters here but you know we are scratching our peanuts when we pin our success on walkons, especially, Sam Sealy!!

While Uconn, Syracuse and Kentucky......future opponents.....try to get 4 star recruits on the bench playing time our desperation leads us to speculate about our walkons?????

Here's a piece of advice .... Hit the recruiting trail hard and bring in some players worthy of wearing a St. John's jersey!

I agree however as the saying goes you cannot teach height. We are what we are this year. Now going back to a game against Rutgers in the 1979 tournament. Looie had to put in bench warmer Rick Bolhinger against James Bailey  because of foul trouble and he needed height. Bohlinger played way better than expected and neutralized Bailey so you never know.

With rare exception walkons are practice players, not high D1 players. Giving walkons playing time will not make them into D1 players. Our season isn't a throwaway, it's a building block for very good things to come with this group of guys, the guys who become eligible and stay, and for future recruits as well.

Silly topic.

How about first getting our guys to play at full speed so they actually do need rest instead of acting like they have better places to be on gameday

Why is it silly? People sit here and complain about our lack of depth, and how we get worn down. Why not throw a walk on and give our main guys some rest? Obviously the talent isn't going to the be same, but that's not the point.

I'm not suggesting that the walk ons play 15-20mins a game, but maybe about 5mins/game. Put them in a minute or two before a media timeout or something. It's a very long season, and these kids aren't going to survive when they are playing 32+minutes every game. While the season isn't a "throwaway", I have a feeling it is going to get much worse before it gets any better...

They cannot provide any meaningful minutes. There is no Phil Missere there. Don't want to single out Sam Sealy but he's 6'8 and went to STJ and didnt get any looks to play ball at D1, D2, or D3. Can't bode well.

The purpose of this season is to get our underclassmen game expereince and for them to do as well as they can. Giving walkons meaningful minute will serve no purpose. All or nearly all will not be on the roster next season, some as early as January.

Peanuts started this post by throwing out the idea of giving the walk-ons a few minutes hear or there. Maybe not feasible, but not "silly". I certainly didn't hear him say anything about giving them "meaningful minutes". Easy boys.

As far as meaningful minutes.....it just all depends on what you define as meaningful. Are they going to fill up a stat sheet or anything? Probably not. But in every sport you always hear about a player who does the "little things" that won't always show up on the stat sheet, but are still really important to a team's success. One of the walkon's "little things" that they could do is to enter the game and give our regulars a quick breather. I think that coming in for a little here and there to give other players a break would be very meaningful.

And remember, we are one injury away from a 6 man rotation, in which case we would be forced to play the walk ons whether we want to or not.....

Walkons get playing time when the team blows someone out. That hasnt been happening and until and unless it does, they wont play. In fact, as I see it the only chances we have for "blowouts" is before the BE schedule starts so it dont look good if you want to see the walkons play

Well in that case there will be plenty of chances for us to see our walkons when we're getting blown out in big east play
