Johnny was the lead for the Crests and later for the Brooklyn Bridge, which I'm sure you know Salty. He became one of my all time favs the first time I heard the words"girlllllllll, I heard you're getting married.....", on WABC radio when I was 9 years old. Had the great fortune of seeing him countless times over the years at small venues in and around NYC. He performed right up until the end. One of the all time great voices IMO, and from some session musicians that I know and who performed with him, also one of the all time great people.

I met Johnny backstage at a fundraiser. He was a short man with a big voice. And very nice in person.

Yes it was Johnny Maestro At that time he just released his 1st record,My Juanita

When I lived in Manhattan, I saw Johnny Maestro & the Brooklyn Bridge several times at both Richard Nader's Original Doo Wop Show at the Garden, and The Royal New York Doo Wop Show, at Radio City Music Hall.
At one of the Radio City shows. he made his entrance from the back seat of a '57 Chevy that was on stage. Trouble was, the doors were locked and he couldn't get out. So he banged on the back seat window, and a stage hand had to open the door for him.

I can't count all of the bands I saw there. Drifters, Impalas, Turbans, Moonglows, Del Vikings, Cadillacs, El Dorados, Passions, Chimes, Elegants, Don and Juan (both members of The Genies), Paragons, Skyliners, Chantels, Johnnie & Joe, Fleetwoods, Harptones, Jesters, Lee Andrews and the Hearts, an so on.

Yep, Monte an all time great. "16 Candles" will live forever. One of the first integrated groups.(Crests)
As far as the Brooklyn Bridge, some members were former Del Satins who backed Dion. I also believe their may have been Starlighters as well. One Brooklyn Bridge song that I liked but was not a big hit was Your Husband My Wife.
Also enjoyed seeing Johnny Maestro many times at oldies shows and his voice still resonates.

So from reading the last 10 messages or so, I'm thinking, are the Crests visiting this weekend?

(Had all their singles when I was a pompadoured 13-/14-year-old.)

Your husband my wife a great lesser know song. Funny you mention Dion, was rockin out to the Wanderer this morning while driving through Bronx(couldn't be more apropos) on the way up to Albany to get my kid from college. Dion, another legend who I've seen countless times and who is still performing. First concert I took my now 16 year old daughter to was Dion at Westbury. She was 5 years old, standing on her seat and boppin to runaround sue and all his other hits. Think we either need to change topic name, or get back on topic. Ha!

Probably my favorite Johnny Maestro moment came this weekend at Tafner when he went backdoor on Malik Ellison and threw it down on Tariq Owens.

My Dear USGuard - in regard to your comment about the Crests "Step by Step" bringing back memories - the lead being your cousins friend -
Well I'm off topic a bit (but the wonderful moderators know input them in for a pay raise so I'm covered...I hope) just had my WP reunion and arranged to have Tommy Sullivan of Brooklyn Bridge Band play (he also was in the Army band when I was a cadet) - great music & dancing
There's a reason they are "oldies but goodies"
- they are good!

What great sharing here if one relate to the 1950-60s music
Tommy Sullivan went to Hicksville HS sane time as Billy Joel
How to keep it back on SJU topic?
Let's see... I do enjoy our band at games and - others can confirm this more than I - weren't the 1950-60s a heyday for SJU BBall - a few of our better decades?

Great reference to all those groups! Thanks!!
You mention Don & Juan
I recall getting off the subway from
Brooklyn Tech HS heading home to watch Dick Clark & American Bandstand when he introduced Don & Juan singing.......
What's your Name
the flip side of that 45......
Tina

And I think Brooklyn's own Neil Sedaka left the Tokens just before they cut A Lion Sleeps Tonight
All the best
