Virginia Game

Glad St. John's is still alive in the NIT. Next game against Virginia is obviously going to be very tough especially on the road. In my opinion, Virginia was the biggest snub of the NCAA. More than 20 wins overall and 11-7 in the ACC(even in a slightly down year) should have been enough especially with wins against Maryland twice, NC State, Tennessee, North Carolina, Duke and at Wisconsin. They did have some bad losses but the overall record, conference record and big wins should have been enough. I would have put them in over Boise St. or LaSalle.
The two biggest problems in this game are going to be, first of all, how smart Virginia plays since they are such a well coached team. The basketball IQ differential between these teams is will be glaring. Virginia also runs actual offensive sets. The second problem is Joe Harris. If you have not seen him play he is one of the top fifteen players in college basketball this year. If he is on his game Virginia will be almost impossible to beat. That being said he has struggled a bit at the end of the year and if he does not play well the Redmen will have a chance if they play with the effort they did tonight and shoot a decent percentage from the field and the line.
I am guessing that Virginia will be 10 point favorites.

Great win tonight. They showed big hearth coming back to win on the road. Big time game winning shot Dom for the game winner (maybe call him Sir Dominator in his senior season :)) and they got their 17th win so the season isn`t a failure to me.
With that said, and I don`t want to be negative after a great win, and yeah I know people will defend him and say can`t I just enjoy the win (which I am.) IFirst I want to say I like Garrett and I know he`s still young and has to learn from his mistakes. I want him to play 25-30 minutes, but could he sit him the last 3minutes? 2 bad turnovers by him and the last one (when up 2 and they`d have to foul us and put us at the line.) they tied it on 2 FTs. If not for Pointer it goes into OT, and maybe singing a different tune.
So we go to Virginia now. They now won 18 straight their house, but streaks are meant to be broken. That would be a big time statement game (not saying St. Joe`s wasn`t). A win there and I`ll start to really get excited.
Lets salvage this season and win the NIT.

And lastly to answer moose (the lavin newsday article. I`m answering it here because my pc was lagging when trying to respond.) When asking "what about the year after next when Sanchez and Sampson leave. Well with losing their best 2 players from the year before even though they`ll have a good number of seniors. Then the next year with those seniors leaving they won`t be as good as next year.
Which is why next year means alot to our immediate future. Think aboutvit n. If they blow up next year and is a top 10 teams. The top recruits will come and with SJU dominating MSG I gotta believe would be a sea of red and MSG would be rocking for MSG like it hasn`t since the Mullin and Berry days.
What recruit wouldn`t want that when SJU is finally back on top of the world, the lights of Broadway shining down on you, MSG freaking going abso-freakinging-lutely insane and NYC`s team does its thing baby, WTF wouldn`t want that? Especially a top recruit from NY to represent his city. Not another state or city on his chest.
I can`t stop thinking about next year because I`m nervous that if we aren`t much better then this year that we`ll only be a pretty good team but not with the likes of the big boys. I want in worst way to dominate like in the 80s. Oh yeah and Syracuse comes to our house, and next year is our time to get them, it better freaking be anyway.

UVA is well coached for game prep, but some Coach Bennett's substitutions and lack of end of game timeouts to set up play cost us a few games. Watch Jontel Evans at the end of the BC & FSU games... just horrible
Watch Akil Mitchell down low, you stop him... the rest will fall in place. Harris is a very good player, but relies too much on threes.

Still should be a good game.

So who are you rooting for? I won't tell anyone, I promise. :)

Watched most UVA games and was very impressed with their victories at home. Joe Harris is a future pro, no doubt in my mind. I figure Sir Dom has to guard him, figuring of course that we play man. They are pretty good at three pointers with Harris, Jesperson and Nolte. UVA is one of the best defensive ( man to man ) teams; they like to double the corner and pivot. Don't take Mitchell too lightly, he can score inside. I was impressed with his sub Tobey who has an excellent shot. Once again we have to rebound and run to get easy shots.
The last time we played UVA at their house we were able to blow them out. Of course we did have a slighly better squad with the likes of Artest, Thornton, Barkley and company.
We can win this game and break their winning streak ( I believe 18 in a row ). Need some balanced scoring.

My Grandfather was a 1937 Grad of SJU

My dad was 1954 grad of SJU

I was a 1985 grad, Redmen all the way. This match up occurs about once decade.

We played home and home late 90s and then 2ed rd nit a few years later. That was the year Va. had the younger Hurly bro. SJU won the 3. The nit game Hatten was sick, Glover not much stat wise, but really busted hump.

I believe we played and beat UVA on our campus during the NIT in the year we won it with Jarvis as head coach-

Terrible time. But it's nice they wanted it on the main network. The winner gets Iowa-Stony Brook winner.

Horrible time! I can't believe they scheduled a post season game this early, let alone prior to noon!!!

Hey gang this is life in the NIT. They will fit these games in a time slot as they go. Just be glad there is atleast another game, and you can watch it.

We beat them at home in the NIT in 2003. A friend from law school is a UVA grad and was on the dance team that year texted me minutes after they won the first round game Tuesday to talk crap. I told her they would win by double-digits, but we would be way better next year. I was at the 2003 game at Alumni Hall and I rember the blowup mascot they had...pretty neat. I'll be cheering for Monroe, NY's Mike Tobey to do well. I wish we grabbed that kid, but he's too skilled to be playing with this squad.

Because of the women's tournament being on ESPN, this was the slot that a game could go for the main network on Sunday. It's the same on Saturday except the Alabama=Stanford game is at noon instead of 11
