Greg “Shoes” Vetrone’s move from Rutgers’s staff to St. John’s assistant is finalized, I’m told. With international connections & contacts everywhere — and a strong friendship with Van Macon — he’ll be a great fit for the Johnnies.

@NJHoopsHaven

I feel like this is a meh hiring. I will say it was pretty late in the process to be hiring an assistant and this is about as good as you could get on short notice.

 I would have liked to see a coach who is a better recruiter than him. He hasn’t been on the bench or out recruiting in a while. I feel like a guy with more local ties to AAU programs or who specialized in recruiting transfers in this new NCAA landscape would have been more ideal.

I am a Rutgers football fan and subscribe to their 247 Sports premium board.

Vetrone's move to St John's was noted on their site today. I just wanted to mention that several Rutgers fans expressed great pleasure with Vetrone's job performance during his tenure at Rutgers and hoped that he could have stayed at RU but understood that an opportunity to be an assistant coach once again was a good career move for him and wished him well.

I also noticed a tweet today that mentioned that Vetrone and Van Macon are good friends. I believe that this is a good hire and that Shoes will do well at St John's.

Talk about a turnaround with Arbitello.  Is there is a HS coach in the country who likes our staff more than he does?  He is consistently effusive with praise in a public manner.

All these "shoes" comments scare me as it reminds me of our last assistant who was always referred to by his nickname and is getting paid longer than Bobby Bonilla

I'd argue a coach in the Bronx and a coach on LI like us more.

Many thought Van Macon was a “meh” hire too but it’s all about fit.  Vetrone is a vet with a million recruiting ties and I think will fit I. Well here.  Van Macon has certainly achieved what we had hoped here and I think having another guy with tri-state familiarity and ties is good.  It may be below the radar but I think it will help us.

From everything I've read Vetrone looks like a solid hire who can only help us in the fertile recruiting grounds of New Jersey as well as overseas due to his time at the highly rated basketball academy in Spain. Wish him all the best as newest member of Johnnies staff!

I'm a little late to this subject, but I offered my congrats to "Shoes" as soon as I heard about his hire. SJU hiring him was a great GET. I've known Greg for over 25 years and was able to observe him when he was in charge of all of the College Counselors at the famed 'ABCD All America Camp' held annually for many years at FDU over in Teaneck, NJ. Shoes organized and ran the workouts/scrimmages the counselors every morning while the H.S. campers were attending 3 hours of Academic classes. He's a consummate professional who checks all of the boxes when it comes to doing a responsible, motivating job when working with players.
His basketball journey has taken him from one coast to the other with stops in between. He's going to be a real asset to Coach Anderson. His work at ABCD enabled him to make contacts with numerous H.S. coaches who came to camp every year to either coach @ ABCD or just to observe one of their players who had been invited. Locally, he knows EVERYONE & should have the welcome mat rolled out every time he enters a H.S. gym.  WELCOME Home Greg, SJU is fortunate to have you join their staff.
For a fun basketball time go on You Tube & type in 'ABCD' CAMP & you'll have 60+ minutes of enjoyable basketball videos of some classic match ups at ABCD. Also, check out Wikipedia's info on ABCD Camp & see the list of GREAT players who participated over the course of 25 years. ENJOY !

Probably the only shirt with buttons that he owns.
