Quite by chance today I had breakfast with a current St John's student who I met at an sju event and asked if I'd meet for coffee. I don't have much time for that sort of thing but I had a schedule cancellation last minute today and he askec if we could meet.
This kid is so emblematic of everything St. John's stands for. An immigrant who came here at age 6 when his family was granted political asylum from their country that persecutes and arrests Christians. Attaining U.S. citizenship a few years ago and enlisting as an Army reservist. Great grades, and planning on law school next year when he graduates in the spring.
I want to be careful not to doxx him, but when coffee turned to breakfast and we were served, he asked if it would be okay if he said a prayer. He addressed me as "Mr." until I suggested he call me by my first name.
It was a quick breakfast because he had to dash back to campus because he was marching with sju in the Veteran's Day parade in NYC.
He will be the 2nd in his family to graduate college and the first to attend law school. He will graduate law school and will enter active duty with the rank of Lieutenant.
If you have any hesitation as to what St. John's scholarships do to transform and elevate a kid, this is it.
I thank him for his service so far and service to be in protecting our freedoms. Here's a kid who understands how precious that is because he was born in a country where freedom does not exist.
I could not have had a better morning.
