Is next year one of the deepest teams in St John’s History?
PG. Marcus Lovett, Shamorie Ponds
SG. Federico Mussini, Malik Ellison
SF. Bashir Ahmed, Richard Freudenburg
PF. Kassoum Yakwe, Darien Williams, Amar Alibegovic AND Christian Jones!
C. Yankuba Sima, Tariq Owens.
We have got an excellent roster that will be extremely balanced and at least two deep in every position next season. Some notes to keep in mind:
1. This Roster most will not be the most experienced, ton of first D1 players next year.
2. I have not included Rawle Alkins. I hope that changes, he becomes the instant starting 2 guard and really elevates this team to NCAA tourney expectations. But for now I’ll leave him out, same for Thon Maker.
3. Players like Ellison, Alibegovic and Jones are getting major minutes this year and may not experience the same fate next year. However, They will make meaningful contributions in the limited minutes they may get. If these guys kept Xavier close at home this year, they will get opportunities, I firmly believe that.
4. I have put players in there "natural position". Chances are everyone except Sima will play 2-3 different positions.
I can’t express how excited I am for next season. The W-L, postseason tourneys really won’t matter to me if we are playing excellent basketball. I understand how good the BE is and know the value of having experienced upperclassmen on your roster. I can’t believe how close we’ve been in games against some of the premier BE teams with our scrappy 8 guys playing, all 6’7 or smaller. I tip my hat to my beloved Johnnies this year! If Mullin and Co. can replicate the effort from this season, shots will fall, defense will improve and our SIZE will have a positive impact on both ends of the court next year.
PS. Rawle Alkins will completely transform this roster if he decides to come home, I hope it happens.
