Vaccaro's Column in the NY Post

He nails it as usual. Vaccaro has been without question the best local journalist with regards to the program. He is a real fan. From the vile excrement (otherwise known as Mike Jarvis) to the deer in headlights (Norm Roberts), he has always been fair and informative about SJU. No agendas. He refused to believe SJU would never be a major player again in the the world of college hoops. His columns read like many of us here. As long as we have a pulse, we have NYC, and we have the Garden to call home, we have a chance.

In the end, I think the team will be a little short of the NCAA's. But I will take an NIT and run with it. Let these kids prcatice, bond, and play together as much as possible. I know posters have been upset with Lavin's hadling of the program. People are questioning wheather he has a solid plan in place, and that's fair.

But what is also fair, is that this team is tough, tight, and unafraid. For all of Lavin's coaching foibles, he deserves major credit for the way this team responds to challenges. I really like these kids. I am going to just enjoy all the remaining ebbs and flows of the season. I am going to enjoy Sampson's maturation, Harrison's fire, and Pointer's energy among many other things.

Most importantly, all of the tough lessons learned this year will pay dividends next year. We are now assured this team never backs down from a fight. They just need another year of growth. Buckle up gang, this will be a fun ride.

Great summary on your part. Fair and even to both sides that people paint on the boards. Nobody I repeat NOBODY thinks were in a worse place than where we have been. All things need tweaks.

Spot on, Moose! (Thumbs up!)

Nice post. Vacc is a great writer, decent guy and passionate fan of his Bonnie's! SBU.

Nice lead post. Agree wholeheartedly. My excitement for and with the program is re-emerging. Not that it was ever dead.... just beat down. Love this team and it's potential. You can see the improvement. Keep up the hard work players AND coaches.... you are on the right track!

Currently the C7 and Uconn are scheduled to be in the BE next year so this is not our last conference meeting as several reporters seemed to be inferring.

no question vaccaro is an outstanding writer. let's not get too carried away, however. he was in norm's jock until the very end thanks to his belief that st john's would never be relevant again.

we may never be relevant, but at least we have hope again.

Mike is, as you note, an excellent writer (always enjoy reading his column) and really nice guy as well. The few times I've emailed him -- in good humor -- about some inaccuracies in articles he'd written (nothing serious), he promptly replied, acknowledged the mistakes in equal good humor ("Can't believe I wrote that" "What was I thinking," etc.), and wished me well. Great to see an article like this coming on the heels of an important win over UConn.

KM -
thanks
but beyond discussion of Lavin's foibles, shortcomings - probably similar to those made when he was a young coach at UCLA,
he's not so perfect and never will be
he strength is where it is and his weakness is where it is
no coach can do it all
hell, choose your assistants wisely to fill in your personal gaps, union gaps
the union forever, hurrah boys, hurrah, for St. John's
I look at what he, General Lavin from out West near where a young Officer Sheridan once served, what Lavin has already accomplished!
I look at where we are!
In 2000-2009 I could not have pictured a more promising script
I cannot find another coach who could have done much different or much better
We are back on the map - as so many have previously noted
I guess I'm not so comfortable with the critique and criticism
but I remind myself it's a nice problem to have
our standards and expectations have risen so these few short years

I hope Coach Lavin stays healthy and, let's see, just stays
stay a little bit longer, please, please, please etc.
thanks for your post and insight
all the best

thanks Northermost
just before Lavin showed interest
I recall Michael Kaye and his staff (and others of course) belittling SJU, gleefully putting us down often on two grand acounts:
no top players would come here
no coach worth his salt would consider signing aboard

the program was crappy, bad decisions were made, at times there seemed no cause for hope - we gave our detractors food for their cause

some of my acquaintences thought I was unrealistic to think SJU would survive but one idea kept me personally afloat:

if g..damn small non-football schools like Gonzaga and Villanova and Xavier could succeed
why the hell could SJU not with its history, the Garden and the like
we had nad have ore to offer, end of the discussion

thanks for your post

all the best

For all of Lavin's coaching foibles,

Did you mean to throw that kind of shot at our coach?

Not so sure about that Moose. Thought with a little more time Norm would have developed into the next coach K.

That was not a shot at Lavin. No coach is perfect. He has his weeknesses as a coach. But I am still a firm believer in what Lavin can accomplish here. He does things less on x's and o's amd more by his gut instincts. My point was Lavin has instilled a toughness and togetherness in this group, and that is a great quality for a team to have. That is a wonderful trait to have, and a quality fans adore about a team.
