Vac weighing in...

There is no way in hell they are ever going to announce a new coach until that individuals current team (if any) is still playing.
Respect your opinion on the Announcement piece but , that’s the former way of doing things . Brian Kelly left ND for LSU before their Bowl appearance last season . Then , had new Coach Freeman Coach in the Bowl game . Besides , maybe the Iona kids play harder knowing Rick is leaving . Which everyone in the World knows will happen , including the Iona players . Rick is out of Iona regardless . What’s big deal about Announcing now ? Whether G town or us . Hopefully the latter not the former .

Time will tell Sly, but I'd be shocked if that happens.

In the last couple of days, one of the longest serving sports columnists in NY and has written a piece about what Pitino would do for SJU.

We have Zach discussing it of course and there is also a lot of chatter among the local high school coaches.

It would not be a stretch to say SJU has not had this much attention since Lavin’s first year. And Pitino is not even an employee here.

Imagine the press conference welcoming him here. It will be a well attended event to be sure.

Pitino will bring in more money and free publicity on a national level (which would be costly otherwise) to more than offset his salary.

Get. This. Done.
LIGHT. CAMERA. ACTION. God bless Shanley, we finally have a real winner as our president. Real winners do real things/ big time things.
If you really want to win, then you get a big time, dominant coach to coach your bball program. There is noooooo one bigger then Rick Pitino.

The Pitino press conference? Shit SJU isn't big enough to hold that, that's MSG MID COURT WORTHY. Let the SJU come for $5 each, open up the 400 level. Let there be "Rick Pitino" chants, "Lets Go Redmen" chants, "WE ARE ST. JOHN'S" chants. Hopefully Soriano, Storr, and everyone else on this team is there sitting next to Pitino and hearing how loud MSG is for Rick, and realizing when SJU is back on top that they could have MSG rocking for them. There is no better place when your on top then the greatest city in the world, NYC.
They can be together the kings of NYC.

You can’t compare Kelly’s situation with this one, it’s comparing apples to oranges.

When Kelly left ND a few years ago, then and know, the college football bowl series is different than it was earlier this century and the past. Unless you are playing in a bowl that is serving one of the bowls for the playoffs, you have players who are pro prospects opting out so as to not get injured and/or hurt their draft status. Winning the bowl is nice but it is easier to leave when in the long run, it’s not going to advance you to anything else.

Pitino is trying to add to his legacy by winning another conference title which does mean something as it means another NCAA appearance and a chance to make a St. Peter’s like run, again adding to his legacy. He does not want to short change himself or his players and no pro prospects opt out of playing in the NCAA tournament unless they are already injured. O’Brien on the other hand didn’t have that carrot in front of him.

In terms of legacy? Georgetown, by

Pitino went from one blue blood to another, basically top 6 conference programs that didn't need an overhaul. He's got that part of his resume done and dusted. Now if he wants to come to a top 6 conference program very close to his LI roots and turn it around from 30+ years of irrelevance to conference and national relevance...........now that would be the cherry on top of his resume.

My post was related to the comment about making the announcement now. Had nothing to do with adding to his legacy when he leaves Iona and brings a program back out of the ashes.

Yes , it will . But , as of right now , the strong commentary seems to support Rick coming to Utopia Parkway . Too many “ insiders ,” in the media and here on this Board have declared it a done deal . Keeping a secret of this magnitude in College Basketball for any length of time is very unlikely . Especially since Rick is such a high profile Coach . Is it realistic to believe if Iona goes on to win 2 games next Weekend in the NCAA that such a secret wouldn’t be commented on ? I doubt any sports writer would keep a lid on it for several more weeks . The entire World knows he’s leaving Iona so why not just confirm it now ?
