Uncle Jack's Steakhouse - Bayside

I've been in a food coma since getting back to NY for the holidays on Monday.

Taking my dad out for a steak dinner tonight for his 70th birthday that just passed. Decided to try Uncle Jack's steakhouse in Bayside for no other reason than I recently saw they were in some type of sponsorship w/ St. John's athletics this year, it's pretty close to his house in Franklin Square and figured I'd try a new steakhouse for the experience.

Reviews seem mixed, but will give it a shot.

I haven't been there in a while but its been open a long time so there must be enough satisfied customers. Biggest complaint is that its overpriced but most steakhouses are. If you go let me know what you think.

Got back about an hour ago..

You're right. Typical, overpriced steakhouse. That said, it overall it was good but not great. Our server was really good, very attentive. Parking on Bell Blvd. was pain in the butt. Ended up using valet service.

Far from one of my favorites though.

Shrimp cocktail - nice size and exactly what you'd expect

Porterhouse steak for two - flavorful, tender but was hoping for a bit more charred texture on outer layer

Mac & cheese had lobster bits in it. Didnt say that on menu. I liked it, but caught my dad by surprise since he doesn't like seafood.

Sauteed broccoli - kind of cold

Split an apple strudel

Didnt see any signage by door about St. John's and didnt bother to ask as I doubted if there was any incentive. Probably more about St. John's giving brand impressions on radio or at games but not sure how restaurant would know if patrons like me were a result of sponsorship.

Thank for the feedback. Pretty much the same as I remember. I will check it out again some time as I am right in the neighborhood. They have a place in Manhattan as well.

If I'm not mistaken, Uncle Jack's owner (Willie ______) used to have a show on the Food Network entitled "Restaurant Stakeout". A crew would film all of the problems in the kitchen and with the front of the house staff in the restaurant that the owner was unaware of to help him/her try to turn a failing business around.

It all looked staged and pretty stupid to me, although it was good for a few laughs.

Is Thursday still "Cougar" night?

When I worked in Melville, we would have supplier dinner meeting there and Thursdays seemed to always have the 40-50 yr old crowd of north shore women with tons of plastic surgery hanging out at bar on the prowl.

Plus at Blackstones I pretty much know half the people that will be there on any given night because Merrill is across the street and Morgan Wells and UBS are close and they all go there
