Tradition and Lasting Program Culture Changes

This was an interesting piece from February that I recently stumbled across on Mullin.

Wondering what thoughts were - I don’t really get why we don’t formally “retire numbers”. But it could be interesting if we start doing this and can start capturing some “tradition” again . Mullins number 20 is not given out but retiring it should be a no brainer. If we want to be “blue bloods” culture consistently it would not hurt to think about this while our program is on the rise again and recognize the elements of our winning history.

Also has anyone heard of plan updates to make new practice center for team and/or revamp Carnesecca arena?

Practice center has been in the works. I think Pitino has elucidated the fact that the Garden is our priority as far as playing games goes. We absolutely crushed it with crowds this past season and will do so again woth more games there next season. I don’t think Carnesecca is a priority but that’s just my guess.

See excerpt from an old Chris Mullin BB camp brouchure.

St. John’s conferred Legacy Honors upon Mullin in 2005, permanently enshrining his No. 20 above Carnesecca Arena and at Madison Square Garden during St. John’s home games.

We know that the only Johnny banner at the Garden (and only for our home games there) is Looie's 526. For some very short time I do remember SJU #20 next to it at the Garden (but not for years now), but my memory could be faulty.

There was this article about Chris's number in a small local Bklyn newspaper, the Greenpoint Star (It might be too old to still link:
