Tough with only 4 men on defense

Mvouika shouldn't even bother coming past halfcourt on defense, he's so horrible he can't even take up space well. He gets beat off the dribble easily, that is when, of course, his man didn't take the wide open jumper he always gives away. Possibly the worst defensive player I've seen in almost 40 years of watching college basketball.
Rest of the crew isn't much better, Mussini can't keep up, Felix, for all his atlheticism, has trouble staying with his man and as a team, any little pick play gives them all kinds of trouble. Lack of effort trying to work through the screen leads to poor switching and plenty of freebies for the wrong team. They need to play zone way more than they do, they just don't have the talent for one on one play.

Excellent observation Ken! Yes, they should zone some teams but a zone also takes discipline and coaches adept at teaching it. Chris hasn't seen a zone in basketball in 30 years and no one else on the staff is expert enough to choreograph it for these kids. The stark reality is last night players that were less than talented bench warmers on last year's team such as Balamou, Jones and Amar played significant minutes out of desperation and necessity. Ron M is a great kid with a great attitude but he is not a Big East player. Durand Johnson has returned to the 6th man role he had at Pitt. However, none of the five starters are actually better players than him. Ellison and Yakwe are 2 years away from being contributors and Musso never started a game while in the Italian league. I never expected him to start over Lovett or Durand Johnson because of his defensive liability. Next year I expect the bulk of starters minutes will go to Lovett, Ponds, Sima, Bashir with Freudenberg and Owens splitting a lot of time up front. It will be a quicker, more athletic team and I am not ruling out a surprise major pick up. We may not win another game and it kills Mullin because he hates losing but the kids losing to D2 teams or Fordham will not be playing the major minutes next year.

It's comical watching RM on D, it's like he has ADD, he's always straying away from his man, towards the ball. He doesn't have his hands up, he's totally useless, he should change his name to pylon.

One of the nicest kids on the team. Unfortunately not Big East talent. How bad is this team? Alibegovic, Jones and Balamou starting is almost equivalent to Lavin starting walk ons. No Lovett, no Sima, no Williams means some high school kid, a skinny two guard that should be a sub and Durand Johnson have to carry the load. No wins in that lineup. We need two major recruits that have scorers mentality to get us to 20 wins next year. There is still time but Jones, Amar and Ellison are not in that stratosphere. Ron M is a very good D2 player with a great attitude. Of this group two years from now only Yakwe, Sima and Alibegovic will remain IMO. With better talent playing time will become rarer for Ellison and Mussini who I see back in the Italian league eventually. Recruit or perish.

Did you guys see how they turned the Alkins thread into an early 80's wrestling thread. It was a classic move and everyone here should check out how its done.

So glad that once this season is over I'll never have to watch Ron M "play" defense ever again. He fails in every aspect, his hands aren't up, poor lateral movement and just totally clueless regarding the situation on the court. couple minutes left in the game, DePaul is getting close to a ten second call and Mvouika just lets his man dribble the ball over half court. WTF???
Speaking of dribbling, who keeps putting that Harlem Globetrotters superball in the game every time Amar puts the ball on the floor? Comical!

It isn't just Ron...

It's the whole team's defense, or should I say, the absence of any kind of defense. It truly is embarrassing.....and that falls directly on the coaching.

But I guess coach Mullin is bringing his NBA influence to the team, the lack of any kind of defense is proof of that.

Other than the slow motion defense last night Ron actually played well and he and Johnson kept them in the game.
A sign of future playing time was evident with Ellison improving while Musso has all but disappeared. With Lovett and Ponds, Ellison may have solidified his role as the first back up off the bench next year. For those that never saw Ponds play and thought Mussini would start over him.......case closed. To beat a dead horse, we are playing Alibegovic, Balamou, Jones with little Musso, Ron M'ouvika and not ready for prime time Sima and Yakwe. It does not matter who is coaching them, it is not a winning group. Not their fault. The biggest prize for next year may have yet to be signed. Seven months of protein shakes, pasta, pizza and double time with the strength coach will turn us into Big East contenders next year. ;)
