Top Recruiting Class for 2012

Which consisted of Amir Garrett, Norvelle Pelle, Dom Pointer, Harrison, Harkless, Greene, Lindsey, and Meikele has certainly not lived up to our expectations at least to this point. Top recruiting classes are not always an assurance of success, but given the cards that Lavin was dealt with, and the amount of schoollies he had to fill, I think he did an admirable job! Point is he in all likelihood had to settle for players he might not have pulled the trigger on under different circumstances. I am afraid that the winning culture that Louie had provided for us may take longer than we think! As far as his coaching acumen is concerned, I think it may be too early to draw any meaningful conclusions. Time will tell!

One thing Louie was excellent at was finding the kids (mostly from NY) who were not as highly ranked/recruited but who played significant rolls on his teams. Billy Goodwin, Matt Brust. Lamont Middleton, Billy Singleton, Carl Beckett, Charles Minland, etc., etc Some right of HS and some as transfers. Those kind of kids are as important to building a successful team as the blue chippers are. I hope that Lavin realizes this and can find some of those kinds of kids moving forward. They are usually the stabilizing presence that Lavin's teams have been missing. I was hopeful that Sanchez could have been one of those kids(I use that term loosely considering his age) but so far that hasn't been the case.

I am tired of reading comments that St.John's players are talented only to see the team spin its wheels against less gifted athletes.

If anyone reading this message has even played organized basketball at any level then they will understand that the most gifted athletes do not necessarily win. Athleticism is an important factor, but not necessarily the determining factor of which team wins a game.

If anyone disagrees then please explain how heavyweight Robert Morris University with less gifted athletes Kentucky last season in the NIT, or for that matter explain Penn State defeated St.John's (Frazier was a 3***).

IMO many of the St.John's players seem more interested in making the ESPN highlight film than making the simple pass. Teamwork, focus and coaching together with coaching wins in college basketball (see Butler, Marquette, Villanova and others).
