Top 20 Big Men- No Obekpa

Obekpa led the nation in blocks as a freshman and not even mentioned as one of the Top 20 big men in the country. But LeBryant Nash is included.

The final installment of our Top 20 player rankings focuses on the big men, and for all the talk of college basketball being a “guard’s game” post presences are a necessity if a team’s going to win a national title. With NBA Draft eligibility rules being what they are, national champions more often than not have at least one elite big man. Some are bruisers who do the majority of their work inside, while others possess the ability to step out on the perimeter and score as well.

Here’s our list of the Top 20 big men in college basketball:

3.9 ppg and .391 ft shooting will not get him in that group. Lav needs to develop an offensive game for him or his stock will not improve much this season.

LeBryant Nash is real good.

He's also a 6'7 SF.

How much drop off does a freshman who led the nation in blocks have going into his second season?

I'm convinced these outlets collectively agree to pump up ACC, PAC-12, B1G schools and UK.

He doesn't belong on this list yet.
Nash is awesome...and he does qualify for a college big man--but barely.

He's a college power forward. Would you take Obekpa over him this year?

If Obekpa played on Kentucky he would be top three hands down. Same player without the hype.
A winning Johnnie team this year will help improve that.

Sure Obekpa belongs on the list. A freshman who lead the country in blocked shots and was a solid rebounder as well. They have Embiid on there who hasn't even played a college game yet. Half the kids on this list aren't even big men. Nash certainly is not one IMO. Montrezl Harrell at 5.7/3.9 over the nation's best shotblocker? C'mon..

And Moe was a college center by that logic. See how that goes.

This isn't a LeBryant Nash vs. Obekpa comparison so it doesn't matter if I'd take him or not.

The point is how is the nation's leading shot blocker not considered one of the top 20 big men the following season? Does he not have the qualifications? It's 100% off base.

But carry on.

Love CO's upside, but you can't put a player averaging 3.9 ppg on that list

Sure you can, if he's the most influential defensive post player in the country. Nobody feared Dikembe Mutombo for his offense...

Thanks for your permission to carry on.
My only point is that Nash is a college big man. That's what this list is. And I have zero problems with him making this list. Settle down a little bit.

I'm with '72 and Marillac, it's not surprising at all that Obekpa isn't on this list.
He's exciting to watch and I'm glad he's on our team, but almost every aspect of his game is still developing.
And the truth is he led the ncaa in blocks, but that doesn't mean he's a great defender yet. Weak-side blocks aren't enough. To make up for his offense shortcomings Chris needs to also be a shutdown defender and elite rebounder. Last season he was, at best, average in those areas. And to top it off, I'm not sure he's a starter on this team. It's difficult to be on any top __ list when you're not even a starter on your own team.

With that said, if he continues to develop, a year from now this could be an entirely different conversation.

If CO is one of the top 20 bigmen in the country, college hoops is more watered down than I thought.

Harrell is a awesome. He'll be a lottery pick and he played for a team that won the national championship! Obekpa wouldn't have averaged 5 mpg for Louisville last year--if he played at all.

If a CB led the league in interceptions or even interceptions returned for touchdowns, would that make them the best CB in the league? It could mean they just take more chances.

Obekpa should not have played more than 10-15 mpg the first half of last season. He had to out of necessity. He did get much better, but he has a long way to go. He's a great shot-blocker but he is not a dominant overall defender at this point. I am hoping he can take the next step this season.

Where does it say that he is the best big in the nation?

If a CB leads the league in INTs, is he not amongst the top players at his position? He'd be a Pro Bowler and an All-Pro but not considered one of the best? That's faulty logic.

And it's exactly why the list can be loaded up with freshmen who have never set foot on the court but get qualified because of what? It can't be accomplishments because they have none.

The way some of you talk down about CO as if the kid was a bust or something. It's amazing.
