Trayvon Reed, 7'1 shot blocker, ranked #76 in class of 2014 is no longer enrolling at Maryland -- was arrested for stealing less than $6 worth of candy, resisting arrest and hitting a cop (on the hand).

So, he's not perfect. But I believe Keith Thomas had a dustup with the law, did he not?

Incoming frosh Trayvon Reed not enrolling at Maryland after arrest

There has been a ton of roster movement at Maryland since the season ended, with five players transferring from the school. And now another player is leaving -- before he even played a game for the Terrapins.

Incoming freshman center Trayvon Reed will not enroll at the school, head coach Mark Turgeon announced on Friday.

“Trayvon failed to meet the standards that are required by the University of Maryland athletics department,” Turgeon said in a release.

“I regret that I was unable to meet the responsibilities that were expected of me from Coach Turgeon and the University of Maryland,” Reed added.

According to the Baltimore Sun, Reed had been arrested Wednesday night in Maryland. He was charged with two counts of second-degree assault, theft under $100 and resisting arrest.

Reed, a 7-foot-1 Georgia native, was ranked No. 76 in the class of 2014 composite at 247Sports. He chose Maryland over Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Alabama and several other schools. Had the big man enrolled at Maryland, he would have been sidelined for the next several weeks with a broken ankle that he suffered in June.

Since the end of the 2013-14 season, Maryland lost guards Seth Allen, Nick Faust and Roddy Peters, along wth frontcourt players Shaquille Cleare and Charles Mitchell.

Recruiting an academic disaster, who just had a legal problem, seems questionable to be kind.

In fairness, he wouldn't be the first academic disaster we've recruited who ultimately ended up on the roster (Sampson, Garrett). Nor would he be the first accused felon (Thomas).

Are we going all high class now? :cheer:

This article tells more. He stole an ice-cream bar and candy worth $5.81. He's 7'1, so I would think the cops would view any action on his behalf as threatening.

Trayvon Reed won't be allowed to enroll at Maryland after arrest

Incoming freshman basketball player Trayvon Reed won't be allowed to enroll at Maryland after he was arrested Wednesday night in College Park.

Reed -- a 7-foot-1 center from Snellville, Ga., who was part of coach Mark Turgeon's top-10 recruiting class of 2014 -- was charged with second-degree assault, second degree assault of a police officer, theft under $100 and resisting arrest.

According to court documents, Reed was arrested shortly before midnight Wednesday after two plain-clothes Prince George's County police officers saw him put an ice cream bar and two candy bars into his pants pocket at a 7-Eleven on Route 1, and leave the store without paying.

When the officer confronted Reed and another unnamed male outside the store, Reed "began acting as if he did not understand," according to charging documents. The officer then reached to place Reed under arrest and Reed attempted to pull away and run.

According to police, Reed hit the officer on the left hand as he was trying to control the Maryland player. The other officer, who was inside the store, went to his fellow officer's aid.

Reed took one four-pack of Reese's peanut butter cups, one two-pack of big Reeses peanut butter cups and a Twix ice cream bar. The total value was $5.81.

Reed has a hearing in district court in Hyattsville scheduled for Sept. 15.

“Trayvon failed to meet the standards that are required by the University of Maryland athletics department,” Turgeon said in a statement.

In the same statement sent by the athletic department, Reed said: “I regret that I was unable to meet the responsibilities that were expected of me from Coach Turgeon and the University of Maryland."

According to a source with knowledge of the situation, Reed’s eligibility for the upcoming season was still in question since his academic transcript – like other incoming freshmen – was still being processed by the NCAA Clearinghouse.

Reed had spent last season at Life Center Academy in Burlington, N.J., in order to help improve his academics while he was coached by former NBA player and college star Pervis Ellison. Reed had been accepted conditionally at Maryland pending the results from the Clearinghouse.

Known mostly as a shotblocker, Reed was expected to help give the Terps a defensive presence inside that they lacked since Alex Len left after the 2012-13 season for the NBA.

Reed had not taken part in summer workouts in College Park after breaking his ankle playing softball at his New Jersey school in April.

The loss of Reed will likely be off-set by the arrival of Michal Cekovsky, a 7-footer from Slovakia, as well as the improvement of 6-11 sophomore Damonte Dodd.

“We want to express our gratitude and appreciation to Coach Turgeon and the Maryland basketball program,” Reed’s stepfather Daniel Moore said in a statement. “We regret that Trayvon has to leave Maryland and miss out on this great opportunity.”

New President would be delighted that we entertain this on heels of Artis fiasco. Yes, different offenses, but why bother? Life Center is another academic sewer. Pass. Ask yourself why Md. is moving on.

Because our frontcourt could be our undoing this year. Surely our new President gets that?

Senseless. Turgeon would have kept him if this situation could be rectified.

Here's why Turgeon is passing: "The loss of Reed will likely be off-set by the arrival of Michal Cekovsky, a 7-footer from Slovakia, as well as the improvement of 6-11 sophomore Damonte Dodd."

Cekovsky is a 4-star recruit. Plus, they have other good big men in the pipline-- including Carter, who is coming in next year.

Whatever makes you happy. Throw something against the wall & it may stick.

Hell no. It would appear we have an individual who believes the purpose of SJU is to have a basketball team

So let me get this straight.

Travyon Reed, who has been accused of shoplifting $6 worth of candy and hitting a cop on the hand does not meet SJU’s high moral standards.

But Keith Thomas, who was accused of felony assault, is welcomed with open arms.

That is a huge double standard.

You got a point. I would say that the main difference is that Thomas's crime happened a while ago and by all accounts he's stay out of trouble since then, while this kid's crime just recently happened. I've got no problem giving a kid second chance(depending on the crime) if he's paid his dues and has kept his nose clean since his infraction.

I'm not saying we should take him, but stealing a candy bar is not the biggest offence in the world. Kids are young and make mistakes. It's not like he stole a car or punched the cop.

He hit a cop. Regardless of the force, that's a serious offense IMO. If Maryland let him go, there's likely more than here then we're aware of either with this specific infraction, other unreported issues or both.

It's to bad these kids can't control their emotions. He goes from stealing a candy bar to hitting a cop, making things 10 times worse.

Exactly. If you brought him campus now and he started stealing and hitting people before the season even starts, St. John's looks horrible. Let him do his penance at a juco. If you don't want to lose two years to that level, sit your first year and get your grades in order.

"We have done our due diligence with this student athlete and all of our concerns have been addressed. We are confident that Trayvon can hit the elbow jumper and finish in the lane."
