Tommy Calabrese/ NJ Councilman

Prototypical Looie point guard. Don't turn the ball over, run the half court offense, and shoot sparingly to keep defenses honest. TC did all of this well. I don't know about "leading the team" to the Final 8, but certainly was the guy who ran the show well.

he was a great guy off the court

With no disrespect towards Tom, he missed the last shot vs. Penn in the 1979 Elite 8 game. He was open and had to take the shot with clock winding down, but missed a 15 foot jumper.

This is only by recollection, but didn't Gordon Thomas have the ball a few feet from the basket and a chance to win the game but failed? Also from recollection Penn got wrecked by Magic Johnson/Kenon and Michigan State in the Final Four that year, no?

SJU was down by two, so Calabrese's shot would have tied the game and sent it to OT. Gordon Thomas shot 60% from the field during that NCAA Tournament, but Tom definitely took the last shot. There was a lot of discussion about it after the game, as everyone expected a last play for Reggie Carter. Carter's last shot of the game beat Duke. He also took the last shot vs. Rutgers but missed. Wayne McKoy's tip in of that missed shot over All-American James Bailey won that game. Tom was a smart player, found himself open with the clock winding down, and took the shot. No one should have a problem with that.

Mich St handily beat Penn in the Final Four.

Memory not as good as it used to be but I seem to remember that after TC missed his jumper both Ron Plair and Gordon Thomas missed follow up shots, Thomas being the last, a three foot bank shot. Heartbreak Hotel! :(
