Tom Seaver

Mike Piazza @mikepiazza31

So sad to hear Tom Seaver has dementia. He will always be the heart and soul of the @Mets ,the standard which all Mets aspire to, this breaks my heart. Do not feel worthy to be mentioned in the same breath, yet honored to be with him in the @baseballhall #Mets #MLB

I concur completely with Piazza.

Tragic. I loved watching Seaver pitch. Brutal, awful illness. Bah.

I wouldn’t wish this on anybody, so sorry to hear. I am a diehard Yankee fan but loved to,watch Tom Seaver pitch.

As a boy, and a fairly new Met fan, Tom Seaver was simply the first real deal as a player for the Mets. While the 67 Mets were mostly over the hill or overrated flops, Seaver ignored all that and simply brought a professionalism to the team that didn't exist before. What deGrom did this past season, throwing an entire season of pitches with purpose and command, Seaver did for his entire career with the Mets. He knew he may only get a run or two max to work with, and given that much would often make it stand up for a 2-1 or 1-0 win. His ERA grew mostly after leaving for the Big Red machine, where with 5 run leads, he didn't have to nick the corners for 8 innings. Simply a joy to watch and may just be the pitcher of his generation among some pretty incredible peers.

That being said, not the nicest guy. I had a coworker who was a kid working in a supermarket near Greenwich CT where Tom and Nancy shopped who would say they were the nastiest, rudest people ever. I was at a card show a while back and the guy in front of me, after paying his 50 bucks, asked Seaver to inscribe a baseball with his autograph plus HOF 306 wins. The girl with him, presumably his daughter asked as the man walked away with his prized ball, told him, "You won 311 games, not 306!". Seaver didn't break a grin, but simply replied, "I know that, but he asked me to sign 306." As if, if the guy's that dumb, screw him.

Sad to hear about his dementia, which has been reported earlier this year. But all in all, not the nicest guys in the world, and never quite connected with the pail and shovel core of Met fans.
