To All The Doubters

Let me begin by acknowledging that we can easily lose every remaining game left on our schedule & yes I would not be happy if we crash & burn given where we are at. But I think there are some members/fans on this site who need to start eating some humble pie, given some of the comments made about this team in the past. The following are are some direct quotes made about this team after just 3 games into conference play from our own "fans".

"This team pathetic. This team sucks, get ready for 20 point beatdowns."

"0-3 to start the season, another long losing season."

"Branch is horrendous & Balamou has zero basketball IQ."

"The season is over, they won't recover from this. A really horrible season is ahead. This team will have a losing record."

"Give me ONE reason to be optimistic."

"We are a glorified AAU showcase team right now."

"Lets call this team what it is: BAD"

"This team is brutally awful."

"My prediction of 3 Big East wins sadly looking good."

"Bricklayers, Sampson, Harrison, Branch & Greene doing their usual" (that one was posted after a win!!!)

I can't believe so many people here gave up on this team & in some cases STILL won't give them credit. I'm not naming names, you guys know who you are. We have 15 wins, and are in the conversation for an NCAA bid, with 7 games left. Even if Syracuse beats us by 50 in the next game, I like this team & where we are headed. No one is happy when we lose but some of those comments, some of them after just 2 freaking games, is not how to support this team.

I have a hunch the majority of those quotes came from two specific posters. Hence, why I (and, a few others) would occasionally state that we should allow the season to play out.

We still have several games left, but we're clearly 'on the fence', in regards to participating in the NCAA Tournament. Interesting times ahead.

Believe it or not, they were more varied (in terms of who) than one with regular participation on here would think. Yes, the usual suspects are behind some of these quotes but it was more that just 2 or 3 guys. That was exactly why I was I so upset with these comments. There were at least 6 other quotes I left off.

Besides the AAU comment (because i think it's true), people are going to feel how they want to feel. Typing it here or bitching from paid seats at MSG/CA is no different.

Have you never been to a Jets/Mets/Knicks/Isles game and booed the players/coach for a lack of effort or poor display?

If any of those quotes were taken from the first GTown game, then I can't really blame them.

I don't like the "throw in the towel" talk. But the rest is just plain emotion, misguided or not.

SJUalum98, did you read the comments??? Those are not comments because of lack of effort. They were comments about throwing in the towel (the very thing you yourself just said you don't like) because we lost a game or two (most of those comments were after the Rutgers game). Saying things like "get ready for a long losing season, we will only win 3 games & get ready for 20 point beatdowns" are not the same as booing a team or player b/c they didn't hustle or didn't give effort.

I hear you.
At the beginning of the season, the team showed very bad habits. I think those comments were based on seeing more of the same at the start of conference games.

I'm not excusing them (nor myself because I know I made some comments), but yes we shouldn't give up on the team so early on.

It's hard when there are so many expectations to start the season, highly rated recruits and a good coach. The team did look bad but I agree we shouldn't give up on them whether it's January or March.

Most of the high expectations were from the fan boards. I remember us commenting on the predictions that had us 10th down to dead last, and there were times thats how we looked. Being disappointed when the team looks awful is normal fan stuff. What I feel bad about is the way some here talk about coach Lavin. The talk regarding what he makes, and how he must pay a price for the team's poor performance way disrespectful and undeserved. This team does have holes, which should not be unexpected being coach has only had 2 recruiting classes. If he had inherited any freshmen or sophomores who could play, they would still be here. We a PG and power forward short. If we have a couple of guys who don't bring their A- game we can still look piss poor. I think coach deserves some kudos for doing what some on the board say is his weakness.

What about all the derogatory comments about Sir Dom?

That post is right on the money!!
