Tip-Off Dinner

Was at The Metropolitan Club for the annual Tip-Off dinner.

The crowd was double from what it was from a year ago.

Would estimate we had close to 200 people there (tables are $10K a pop)

Chris was very enthusiastic about his team.

Bill Walton could not have been nicer.

Spent an hour and a half before the dinner mingling with guests.

Spoke for at least 45 minutes during the dinner. If he was allowed to he would have went another 45 with ease. Was a hoot and a half. Thouroughly enjoyed being there. Talked about the rich tradition of SJU hoops and how Chris was going to get us back to our rightful place among the elites.

I've been to countless SJU sports affairs and Bill was by far and away the best speaker we have had and we have had many excellent guest speakers.

Bill Raftery, who was going to ask Bill questions, could barely get a word in, LOL !

Walton stayed after the dinner to sign autographs and take pictures. Was in absolutely no rush to leave.

The message from Bill (at least one of his messages) was that it was incumbent among all of us to get behind Chris and the program whether that be by financial contributions or by providing internships for student athletes. If we aren't talking up the school or the program who will ?

Had many nice things about Coach Carnesecca (who was in the house). Said he reminded him of Coach Wooden in many ways.

Had many funny stories about his relationship with Coach Wooden over the years

He and Chris had a very funny exchange about when they went biking in Hawaii on Thanksgiving Day years ago

SJU gave Bill a Grateful Dead picture as well as a St. John's cycling shirt

Bashir, Malik and Justin Simon participated in a Q&A

Several members of the defending Big East Champion women's team also participated in the Q&A

Coach Joe T. has 4 freshman and a JC transfer on this year's squad.

Bobby and his wife attended the event as well as the new Dean of the School of Business,

Mike Simon, the Dean of SJU Law also attended

As a book keeping note 4 Hall of Famers were there last night: Coach Carneseccca, Chris, Bill and Mitch Richmond.

I think more people would consider financial contributions to basketball team if they were more responsible with the money.

They throw money all over the place for wrong reasons - buying out contracts etc, wrong hires.

Instead should focus on having an Athletic Director and keeping great talent around like Kevin Barry.
