Timeouts

Was at the game last night and thoroughly enjoyed the "W". As I live in Litchfield, CT it is particularly nice to get a win over Yukon.
I thought the key baskets were Obekpa's two free throws (neither of which were even remotely expected) and then his "jump" shot from the foul line. Gave us some points where no one expected. I have been lamenting our prior inability to score the FREE throw but last night seems to indicate some improvement in that area. School is still out guys! Legs will be more wobbly in the next two games.

Question: The game had a really funky rhythm (If there was any rhythm at all) to it because of all the timeouts both team and TV. Would you advise me on the timing of TV timeouts during regulation and overtime? I understand normal team timeouts. Do they come at specific intervals (I"m guessing yes) example 4, 8, 12 and 16 minute mark? Same in 2nd half? Thanks.

Those are the TV timeout breakdowns, yes.

Given the above info, I'm wondering why many people (on a different thread i.e. the game recap) were critical of our coaching staffs use of timeouts. We had 3 and UConn 4 left at halftime. It felt like there were twelve timeouts in the first half. The game had no flow at all.

Wasn't it UCLA who won the NCAA Championship with 6 players none taller than 6'8"..... because with all the timeouts a player in good shape just will not get winded? Of course, the coaching staff has to be strategic in the use of team timeouts and know exaactly where the TV timeouts are occurring. The best coaches understand this.... second nature. I don't feel we used timeouts badly last night. IMHO.

In fact I believe STJ only had 2 timeouts left after the first half because of the time out he called when Dlo got the rebound with 33.6 seconds (one possession) left in the first half. I would think most believed he should pocket that one and just call a play for the last shot.

Another question in this regard. How does a fan know when a TV vs team timeout is charged? Who determines a TV timeout should be called? Is it the timer or an official? Obviously, you can't call a TV timeout if a player is on a breakaway for a dunk for example. Is there a particular mechanic the officials use to tell the table/us? Is it an announcement? Or, do we, as fans, simply monitor the charged timeouts as displayed?

I can't believe I'm asking these questions. I'm reacting to the criticism of our coaches I guess. I can't be critical unless I'm informed. My guess would be the determination is made at the first dead ball after each marker i.e., 4 minute, etc.

The TV timeouts are the first whistle under those denominations you mentioned above. If a team calls a TO there are times they are extended with TV timeouts. I don't know those particulars honestly when that happens and when it doesnt.

We you agree we should know... i.e., before we are critical of how the staff uses timeouts? Can anyone specifically enlighten us?

There was one timeout in the first half where Lavin was adjusting his watch and the ref thought he was calling for a timeout. I forget which one it was.

For real?

Yeah right after Daniels made a basket with a little over 4 minutes left in the first half there was a timeout called by us and I saw Lavin look shocked and he motioned to the ref and was yelling at him that he was adjusting his watch and not calling for a timeout.

Ive always felt that you want to have at least 3 timeouts for the second half. They are vital for late game situations such as, tie ups, inbounds, and setting up plays.

Agree, and also to stop a run. Time out with 33 seconds in 1st half was needless and should have been saved for second half. Coaches typically c
all a TO at this time when they haven't used one in the first half and would lose it by rule.

You do not lose timeouts until the game is over. You can carry 5 team TO's to second half and overtime if there is on. Of course you get one additional for O'T.

You are WRONG. 5 TOs to start, if you don't use at least one in the first half you lose it and have 4 to start the second half.

Here is the official rule

"Each team carries over any unused timeouts from the first half but can carry no more than three 30-second timeouts each. the fourth is lost if it was not used in the first half."

You also can carry over the one 60-second timeout you get so bamafan is right.

As I recall, and I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, the original rule stated you CAN carry over the 5th timeout if the game isn't on TV or radio and there are therefore no Media Timeouts. Of course this doesn't apply to the vast majority of games between Div 1 teams any more. I could be wrong in that rather than confuse the issue media timeouts might have become a permanent part of the rule. Wonder if there are media timouts in Div 3 games with no true media coverage?
