Time to move on

I know that everyone still wants to talk about Nuri leaving and the Rise situation, but I think it is time to move on. Right now the remaining players need our support, it is a young group who can get down on themselves quit easilly. We have good players on this team and are getting another in a few days. The past is the past lets move on to the future and support this st. john's team!!

it is a young group who can get down on themselves quite easily.

I'm actually not worried about this at all. I like the mental makeup of the remaining guys.

I do too, as long as they can keep Harrison under control.

I'm just worried about potential injury.

I like our walkons. Give them 30 minutes a game and see what they can do.

What do you base that on? They barely got time in one game, and from what i saw were typical walk-ons. If we have to give them 30 minutes a game we're in trouble. Where's Phil missere when we need him?

There is no way to sugarcoat this latest player issue other than to say this is unprecedented at St. John’s. I cannot recall when in a period of 18 months six players recruited by St. John’s were either declared ineligible, decommitted or transferred. What occurred in 2004 in Pittsburgh does not qualify as that was a whole different issue.
Losing half your recruits is even unheard of in programs where the admissions standards border on junior college like UNLV.

HIGH RISK RECRUITS---------

Granted the staff had to take risks in offering 9 scholarships but four of those players (Lindsey, Sampson, Garrett and Pelle) were questionable as early as last June. The fact that three had to attend a diploma mill was even more worrisome.

I am sure this is not sitting well over at SJ. Some questions need to be answered:
Who is vetting these kid’s academic qualifications?
Who is responsible for staying current with their classroom performance?

Academics aside, I think fans were a bit misled with the Nurideen Lindsey press releases before he got to SJ. Who went out to his JC and scouted him? How many times? Did he have the same liabilities then in his game? What was he promised? Regardless, after 9 games I too had to come to the conclusion this recruit was a bust.

THE COACH………

The Steve Lavin absence has had a negative effect for sure but no one can be critical of a cancer patient and cancer always has bad timing. If stamina is the real issue it should not stop him from training the kids that came to play for him even if it means stay at the Vincentian residence a couple of nights a week.

THE SEASON……..

We have five talented players in the four frosh and GG. I recall in 2004 when we were putting a lineup of Curtis Johnson, Hill, Andre Stanley, Phil Missere and Kylr Cuffe on the floor. The current group is more talented than that bunch but the results will likely be the same in the BE games unless Garrett is better than expected.

QUESTIONS…….
Are there any other player issues going on? What coach is doing most of the recruiting with Lavin out? Is SJ involved with any players that can make a real impact next season? If Creighton and UNLV that do not play in the Big East can get nationally ranked, how long do we wait for dividends to pay before fans jump ship again?

I very much enjoy the writings of Richard Carlson Ph.D who unfortunately died a few years back only in his 40s. His best seller Don't Sweat the Small Stuff had many observations among them this: if you do 20 things in a day and one goes "wrong" what do you dwell on when you get home at night? We're dwelling on Nuri and a few other "transfers/changes" etc.

We're beating it to death.

We have a great history; many tremendous coaches and players and exciting times; Lavin and staff have brought us to another planet (NCAA planet); Green, Harrison, Pointer, Moe, God and his gift, perhaps Garrett and even Stith - there kids are here, apparently want to be here and are the beginning of the resurgence of SJU B-ball.

Coach Lavin has said all the right things from day one especially when he commented that St. John's was asleeping giant which I felt for years. My old mantra - how could other non-football small Catholic schools excel and SJU not? (Villanova, G'Town, Dayton, Xavier, Marquette, DePaul et al.).

We got a good thing in progress/process. I won't dwell on the few out of twenty things going on.

all the best

I like it when you have some big picture thoughts to share. Now is the worst time to panic. The battle is getting hot, the heat is on, and banding together is of utmost importance.

I know I'm in the vast minority here, but I do not think D1 basketball has seen the best of Lindsey. I have a feeling he will transfer to a pretty good D1 school, and prove a lot of people here wrong. If all us fails, he may just end up at Iona, and my guess if it that happened, he would put together a couple of really good seasons.

He says he wants to be closer to home. So no Iona. I feel he goes to Lasalle or Drexel and never plays for them. I think he would use their facilities 2nd semester then try his deal with the NBA.

Temple? Nova? If Jay Wright wants him, he could probably handle him really well. My guess is that Cluess will put out feelers, though. I'm curious, Moose, did you think he was a bust, or just finding the adjustment difficult so far?

Can't go to Nova. And I don't think Dunphy would take his garbage. I also really don't see Cluess putting out feelers.

I just think he has his eye on the next step regardless for what he says about college blah blah blah. Its hard not to say he was a bust. He just never adapted to structured ball and having to involve others. I've never seen such poor handling than I did the last two games.

Yes....VAST minority is correct! LOL!

I said that I had come to believe what others had speculated after 5 games, I.e., that Nurideen had an extremely poor shooting touch, that he had no 3 point range and he was strictly showing a dribble-drive to the basket game and not involving his teammates on key plays. If he was anointed the starting point guard before he came to SJ, then he was a bust in those areas of the game I mentioned above. Had he chosen to stay I am sure he would have gotten better over time but there is obviously more involved here than meets the eye.
I frankly do not care where he ends up and assuming he took his finals and leaves in good standing, he will not see competitive basketball at this level again as Moose inferred. A guy with an ego issue like his and a parasite possee in Philadelphia pushing him, he will try to market his game somewhere but I would put money that OTIS becomes a Supreme Court Justice before any NBA team touches him. There are more point guards in Serbia and Slovenia with better field goal and foul shooting skill!
Yes, it is time to move on.........

Wait! What are you saying? He's self absorbed, thinks he invented the game, dosn't need the other four guys on the floor and thinks he deserves to be paid idiotic amounts of money just because he exists, then he's perfect NBA material!

You don't get it. he doesn't want school. He thinks he's an NBA'er right now and that the staff was not showcasing him enough by allowing him to turn the ball over 6 times per game and making him do crazy things like learn how to really play the game. The kid is all street game. He's not interested into transferring to any school that's going to give him structure nor who runs real offensive and defensive sets. He wants somebody to give him the ball and say "go play".

Poor kid. A disappointment in the preseason, a bust after 9 games, and soon to be a gutless never was. He's the Solomon Grundy of fail.

Look at these pathetic stats after 9 games.

9.7 pts / 1.9 reb / .416 fg / .5 A2TO

Whoops! Sorry, that was that other JC bust Dwight Hardy. But still.

And the moral is: it's impossible to live up to unreasonable expectations, whether your own or others.

What is sad is that kids like this throw away their real chance in life at not only getting a college degree FOR FREE, but also at a chance to develop properly for a real chance at the next level.

From my experience and observations as a teacher and a coach, it seems like a lot of kids these days seem to want instant gratification and they do not want to wait one second to earn the prize properly with hard work.

If this kid thinks he is NBA ready, he really should give Omar Cook a call and ask him what he is up to these days. . At least Cook played in some Big East games.

We have seen it before, and will continue to see it again as these kids become delusional from the hype of their inner circles.

kids these days
