Tim Welsh / "Cappy" Offense

Don't get me wrong - I was thrilled to see the Johnnies win on the road against a ranked team
But, Tim Welsh's comments were spot on
We were successful forcing the action on offense but went into a shell way too early, which almost cost us the game
The "Cappy" offense is a delay game that often resulted in a desperation 3 point heave at the end of the shot clock
It allowed Cincy to make some easy baskets, gain momentum and get back into the game
Not a great job down the stretch by our coaching staff IMHO. Their decisions almost blew the game for us.
BTW, Rutgers played well today vs. Pitt. Don't take them lightly. It won't be an easy game for us.

Didn't the commentators say that Lavin is 150-10 with a late game lead? Maybe he has some idea?

I'm not saying that he doesn't
But it sure didn't look like that yesterday
If D Lo doesn't hit that wild 3 ball from Outer Mongolia with the shot clock expiring late in the game, we don't win
He definitely pulled the plug way too early
That C(r)appy "stuff" is almost like a "prevent offense"
It allowed Cincy to get back into the game at a time when when they looked like they were done
Bad coaching decisions late in YESTERDAY'S game IMO

The same strategy, with seasoned veterans and better floor leadership, probably works out a lot better. Unfortunately, they did a good job neutralizing D'Lo and no one else knew what to do at the end of the shot clock.

True but perhaps the staff just wanted and needed this win so badly that delay seemed like a good move This win was huge for us

There was to much time left. That strategy decreases your chance of scoring, by taking desperation shots as the buzzer runs out. That stategy cost us our 10 pt lead and almost the gane.

BINGO!!!

I agree, you can knock maybe 20 seconds off the shot clock but start your play with at least 15 left rather than 5. I was not happy with the stall game. If you are going to do that and suspect that you may need to heave a 3 pointer then insert Marco into the game on the offensive end when you can in case things break down.

The proof for your statement is Lavin's 1st year. He took a team that had never seen success and with this very system took them to wins over how many top 10 teams? The system was run by seniors then. We now have Freshmen and Sophomores running that same system. It may take some time to get it down.
I must say I was going nut watching it though! Screaming at the screen the same thing it seems every St. Johns fan was, "to soon", "to soon".,

I dont care if you have seniors or MCD AAs. Stalling with that much time on the clock and only a 10 point lead is a recipe for giving a W away.

How is this even being described as a "system"?

If nothing comes of it besides an Isolation, that is not a system.

People are complaining that he stalled the game out at the end, but this was ran every single time down the court.

I'm curious as to why this staff refuses to design plays. I'm not going off the deep end and accusing them of not knowing how to design plays. But it shows a lack of something to run a weave every single offensive possession.

It really does require a guard who can break down the defense if/when the clock winds down...hopefully Branch will improve its efficiency

Four minutes left in second half is an eternity to hold the ball. More times then none you get the wrong guy with the ball as time is running out.

Thought the delayed sets were fine.... how do you get good at it if you don't try it in play. Yes, I believe they practice it as well. Important to show confidence in and encourage your team.Problem was not having a point guard.... Green tried his best but really didn't penetrate, continue to rack and/or kick back out. Harrison bird dogged. Branch would have been more effective as he will get more time as his game and his confidence returns. Hope his foul shooting ability is better than 75%. They are frosh and sophs and Cincy is fast and long. We did almost blow it but we didn't. I love Lavin's demeanor and his comfort with the team learning. I've been a fan for many, many years and forgetting the years 2001 to 2010 is real easy with this team. I'm watching every game I can. Miss the days of going to the games though...

It's not the system, it's the execution. The goal isn't to run clock specifically, but that's what happens when our guys don't appreciate what's available to them.

You wouldn't know it, but a big part of this offense is passing to a cutting teammate. If you look at diagrams of this offense, we should be looking to pass to the player who is cutting from the opposite side of the court.

It's called a reverse action, or reverse motion. Pete Newell is credited with it. Cap Lavin played for Newell, and hence the reason our guys call it "cappy".

Basically we need to set crisper screens and look to pass more.

You're giving this team/staff too much credit be ause that is not what I see being executed out there.

I don't disagree, it looks like $h*t '98 .. but from what I can tell, that's what they're trying to do.

I just point to the South Carolina game when they were actually using the cuts and back doors, etc. Amir had a good game as he was constantly flashing.

But what I see game in and game out is just more about winding down the clock.

We're not stupid. Lavin called it a read option offense during the Cincy game. I'm like in theory, yes it is. But that is not what's going on out there.

Fact of the matter is that we are more times than less just fortunate that D'Angelo bails us out rather than us actually executing on offense. Long-term, you can't have success hoping for that. And that is why I get so frustrated watching us not grow on the offensive side of the ball since Game 1.

Yea, I feel the same way. Very very little of our production comes in the flow of the offense.
Most of it is D'angelo bailing us out, or a play breaking down,

You see flashes of people cutting back door and things like that.. but not enough.
My real hope is that Branch has the kind of vision to see things the others can't. If he starts moving the ball around, it could become contagious.
