Tim Higgins retiring

He was no better or worse than the other officials who do Big East games. Some nights he was better than the officials with whom he worked and some nights they were better than him.

I completely agree. I've defended him on these boards for a while so no harm in doing it one last time. Higgins played football with my uncle in high shool and used me as his caddy when I was growing up. The guy is simply hysterical and a real good guy. Back when I was in high school he was making a ton of money with his brothers company and only reffed because he loved the game and being around it.

Being a ref is such a hard job...I was probably the worst that has ever attempted it. Good luck to Timmy...now he can spend more time on his golf game.

reffing is a thankless job but higgins and burr are the most hated refs in college bball whether they deserve it or not. the rutgers game comes to mind even though it went to our favor.

If you didn't know him you wouldnt be defending him ;)

I have a friend who knows Ed Corbett. Corbett has a full time job on top of officiating. I'm sure a lot of guys do and bottom line so many times we see a ref on back to back night doing games that are a pretty good distance apart. That catches up to you no matter how you shake it. Refs should be full time and not do it as moonlighting.

Doesn't suprise me that he's a great guy. Whatever issues we've had with him in the past, you could tell on the court that he was cool. You never saw him instigate an argument with either a player, or a coach, and he didn't have a quick trigger WRT technicals.

Bob Donato hanging it up too, according to this article.

Burr, IMO, should have been fired years ago.

That is a good point re: Higgins. He just liked to be seen out there making emphatic calls. Good for 3-4 charges a game guaranteed. He didn't chirp back at coaches and players like Burr, Hess and Les Jones.

The saying goes that a ref, umpire or any officiating position is doing a good job when they go unnoticed. You always new when Burr or Higgins were referring a game. Don't even know too many other college BB refs names.

Realize I am quoting myself but i couldn't think of the other ref i wanted to mention which was the late Pete Pavia who i believe was from Syracuse and always seemed to have it in for St John's and always made emphatic calls with great relish and were very controversial.

I don't think that applies anymore. So many games are televised now, and the names are ususally on the bottom of the screen. Plus, the announcer usually mentions a ref by name at some point in the broadcast.

Those who are/were in the Red/White Club reception room, also get game stats, which lists the refs, and over time, can put the names with the faces.

On the subject of fans knowing the refs by name , I would be remiss if i didn't mention the name of stevie Honzo . He was a legend in the 60's and 70's . He reffed the famous SJU - Mich. game in the Holiday festival. Many of our opponents believed he was a SJU homer . He was a resident of latrobe Pa. and always had a deep tan even in the middle of the winter .

Does anyone remember from the 70's Larry Lembo ? I think he was a player and grad of Manhattan and always seemed to shaft us with bad calls. It's like he was getting back at us for beating the Jaspers all the time.
