Tim Cleuss Q&A

This interview tells an awful lot about Tim Cluess. A few years ago, my son was on the same little league team as Tim's son. He and I became casual friends about 5-6 years before that when I coached the same son in a town intramural league basketball team. I had asked him to help out a couple of time, and he was amazing at getting 3rd and 4th grade kids organized, and being totally at ease around kids that age, most of which had little to no basketball skills. At Little league, although neither of us coached, he intently watched practice, and in no time flat learned every kids name. When they came in from the field, he would offer most of them quiet enoucragement, calling them by name.

Tim is certainly one of the great guys in sport, period. I totally support what Lavin has done here, but if we ever had a chance to hire this guy, he would be something special for this university to have.

I like Lavin too. But we should have grabbed up Cluess when we were able to.

Yeah our fans would have loved a guy going from CW Post to the Big East. The boards would have crashed.

I like a little rambunctious on the sidelines but he's a lunatic. I want nothing part of him at STJ when and if we go another direction.

But our fans are never happy no matter what! Too much experience, not enough. Too animated, not animated enough. Sometimes I think we are the worst fan base around. Many here act like we are Kansas or Kentucky basketball. We are not!

We are lucky to have Coach Lavin. But I do think Cluess is going to be great at this level. I'll stick with our coach as long as we keep rising over the long haul.

I've said numerous times our fans will complain if we had 10 straight years of 20 wins.

As for coaching preferences I think thats totally different and warranted. His teams play no defense which flies in the MAAC but wouldn't at a higher level and the way he lets his players run wild is a total turn off. Thats me though. A lot of people love him for the STJ ties.

Tim mentined St. Agnes and Frank Morris in his Q&A.

For those much younger than I, Morris coached a bunch of players who played big-time hoops including Frank Alalgia (St. John's), Mike Palma (Wake Forest and Iona), Peter Crotty (ND), Charlie Mahoney (Manhattan) and Mugsy Molloy (Princeton).

Sure you can add to the list.

1) I don't mind his demeanor on the sidelines. Guy can coach, period. Especially offense. Needs help on defense though.

2). he'll be available for SJU job should we want him. I think he's wanted this job for a long time and probably stil does. No worries about him not being hired last time around.
