Thoughts after 2 games

I know everyone was waiting with bated breath for my player evaluations, so after the first 2 games here goes:

Mullin-Greatest coach in program history based on winning %. But seriously even w/o BE talent, we have more ball movement and player movement than we have had since the Elite 8 team. We will turn the ball over, miss shots and do not have any low post scoring but so far I like the way we have played.

Sima- If he stays 4 years I believe he will be a first round draft pick. Obekpa was a freak at blocking shots , but Sima is already a better all around player.

Jones-Looks to have an improved motor, but I still predict his game suffers the most once competition gets better.

Johnson- solid player who will probably be our leading scorer. Nice mid range game. Not sure he will be able to finish consistently and three seems a bit out of his range, but solid.

Ellison- going to be an up down year as he is a typical frosh with some talent. Going to get invaluable experience this year. Don't think he will ever be a star but I think he will eventually be a good player on good teams. Shot is really slow. Has to work on that and finishing.

Mussini -WASJU calls dibs on him as his favorite player. Going to have problems getting in the lane and physical teams are going to be a nightmare for him. I predict he breaks the schools TO record for game and season this year. With that being said has the nicest looking jumper since Larry Wright was sitting on Norm's bench. Might be best jump shooter since his coach. Crafty and most fun to watch on team. Reminds me of Henry Steele from On on One. If you don't know who that is, shame on you. Also a shame Lovett not eligible as would have been my favorite backcourt since Barkley and Bootsy.

Williams- Looks rusty but is active and has a nice stoke. I like him and think he will be a good player. Don't like the shorts

Amir-Once we get better talent he won't play. Needs to rebound better when he does play.

Mvouika -I really like him and he would be a good player on a good team. Like him paired with Mussini and I think that will eventually be the starting backcourt. Reminds me of Reggie Jessie his soph and Junior years with a better jumper. And yes that was meant as a compliment.

Mvouika/Jessie comparison is exactly what I see also.
Same size, kinda slow, does a little of everything well.
Expect him to be starting soon.
Great summation.

Im hoping Williams foot work or lack there of, is in large part due to his time away. He cant make a pass, shot, or move without moving both feet in different directions.

He looks uncoordinated doing anything but spot up shooting. Maybe it is the shorts? At worst though you have a 6-8 spot up shooter.

Thought Jones thing would upset you, but he is going to have to prove himself against better comp before I believe in him.

My concern from last night was Mvouvika seeming to play one-on-one at times and not passing to others. Might have been a case of correctly reading his man and challenging him. Just hope he will look to others occasionally.

With a rebuild, I am most interested in seeing Mussini, Sima, Ellison, and Williams get better. I don't see Amar and Christian as part of our future, and Johnson and Mvouika will hopefully pass their experience on. Next season we will have a back court of at least Ponds, Mussini, Lovett and Ellison and a front court of Williams, Yawke, Owens and Sima barring any other disasters. Really hope we can add a couple of others and save some scholarships for the 2017 class. Years 3 and 4 should be really good.

Four assists in 25 minutes.

Haha, I too want to see him continue against better comp but right now there is no question as to who should be our starting PF.

If Mvouka keeps playing like he did last night. He will be a starter. Was pleased w the team after 2 games.

Chris Mullin keeping it real. He wasn't fast, but he was always in motion with a purpose. Once he teaches guys to flash to a spot in synch with ball moovement, there will be plenty of open shots. So much happier to hear critiques after a 20 point win from Coach than just praise or elation.

The team seems to be improving every game as they begin to absorb what Mullin is trying to teach them and as they get more comfortable playing with one another. In a rebuilding year let's just hope we keep seeing this kind of improvement every game and then hope to play spoiler in the BET in March. If we had LoVett the learning curve wouldn't be as steep if he was as good as advertised. All in all, I'm happy with what I have seen so far all things considered.

We will all get a better idea of the talent that we have when the real competition starts. A lot of posters believed that Achiuwa had NBA talent after a few games against the bottom feeders. Same for Justin Burrell. I like a lot about Sima. He has great length, and seems deceptively strong considering his frame. What's missing is NBA athleticism. Then again, almost every Lavin recruit had NBA athleticism, which didn't translate into wins and was often brutal to watch. But to NBA GM's, athleticism is what they look for, along with size and length. That's why Lavin has 2 of his SJU recruits in the NBA and 2 in the D League. And only 1 BE tourney win and 1 NIT win that I can remember, and no NCAA wins at all.

Did someone compare Mvouika and Jessie? RM is 6'4, isn't Jessie closer to 6'8? Mvouika's main skill set is shooting the 3, while Jessie deteriorated so fast I can't recall what he did well, but it wasn't shooting the basketball. Maybe Ellison and Kennedy an OK comparison. After 2 games, I am most impressed by Coach Mullin and the staff, who have these guys playing better team ball than I have seen here in years. I see very little bitching and moaning, unlike our uber athletes of years past that were never fouled in their collegiate careers. These guys, almost all new to each other, seem to have bought in to what the coach wants. That is a huge statement about Mullin's ability to bring in smart, high quality players, and is also a reflection of the respect he commands. That's why the future looks so bright.

"...motion with a purpose..." - great point

thoughts

After Stac I thought Mulllin might be Corky on the bench. Now I'mm very happy as he is much more involved

Mussini what I thought which is very good

Ellison still finding his way

Williams- Dissapointed but it's only 2 games

Jones- could be resurrected like christ

Durand-needs to get his groove which comes in spurts now

Amar- I'm not as negative as others

Holyfield-stilll wondering if he is related to Evander

Sima-Obekpa Who

Slice-Tony Soprano Lives

Matt A- Destined to be #1 assistant/lead recruiter ( And I mean that in a good way ) but don't ever let me see someone talk about him taking over for Mullin here.

St Jean- Destined to be head coach somewhere

Keep in mind all these predictions come from my couch but I have a 4k TV so that gives me extra knowledge. lol

Reggie was 6-7. As for his skill set, he was an excellent passer and good defender who fit seamlessly into the framework of an excellent, beautifully balanced team. However, in his senior season -- playing without Artest, Barkley, et al. -- his game definitely deteriorated, even bottomed out. He looked lost at times, as if he just didn't care, and probably ticked me off like no other Redmen ever.

Mvouika handles the ball well and in fact brought the ball up when Wagner pressed. He is not quick but gets to where he wants on the court. Sort of slow motion smooth like Jessie. Yes reminds me of Reggie Jessie as a Junior and Soph.

Is there even any content available in 4K? just asking this as I work for a production company and although we shoot in 4k we have yet to ever deliver a finished product in 4K.

I'm cautiously optimistic about his ability to help Mussina beat the press until I see him against better teams than Wagner. Everyone in division 1 can play. The question is how do they play against the high majors. Achiuwa was exposed as an undersized 5 as soon as the real part of the schedule began. The bigger issue is that RM appears to be our 2nd best option to Mussini, who is playing out of position to begin with. When you have a depleted roster, you have to find the best options available.
