This year's team compared to next year's team

Shamorie Ponds carried our Team for 2 years ! He was one of the 5 Best Players in the BE for those 2 years . He had a talent that is absent this year . And , despite the heat he took in not being a PG, he did make Players around him better too! Lots of times his sleight of hand passes were fumbled or, resulted in missed bunnies . Marvin Clark had a poor Second half of the season. Last year . Basically contributing nothing down the stretch of the BE regular season , Tourney and 1 NCAA game . Ponds , as many have said, made both Heron and Figgy look better than they have played this year . We counted on them this year to improve on their numbers from last season and be more reliable and consistent players . So far , we haven’t gotten the 35 points a game we need from them on a regular basis . Arguably , we could have won the Butler and PC games if our team had performed better at crunch time , when a basket here or there might have secured the win . The Xavier and Hoya games were Road blow outs and losses were not unexpected . Although we should have given G’Town a better game . I don’t think we have the ability to beat a very good SH team on Saturday but , one can hope .

I'm really looking forward to seeing Cole next year in action. Usually when CMA recruits a top tier JUCO players they have big first years.

Just looking at the roster if nobody leaves and LJ leaves early for overseas, I think the rotation will look similar to this.

G - Dunn / Alexander / McGriff
G - Williams / Wusu
G - Cole / Caraher
F - Champaigne / Earlington / Sears
F - Moore / Roberts / Steere

I'm pretty sure though knowing the college basketball landscape at least 1 or 2 of those guys will transfer out and we'll add a couple more. I'm also hoping LJ stays, there's still a whole lot he can work on and I feel he would benefit from another year of college basketball, at least give himself a chance to be looked at as a 2-way contract player in the NBA.

Life as a sju fan. Speculating on next year in January.

Agree, especially considering no one knows what roster will look like at this point.

I wouldn't over hype McGriff. It's highly unlikely he is ready to be a starting PG in the Big East next year.

I have a question. I believe I read that the team can go to Europe over the summer this year. If that’s the case, can the recruits for this season go with them? That trip could be huge for the development of this team next year.

Yes, they can go with the team.

If they signed the loi and are on next years team, then why couldn't they?
What about the 6'10 juco transfer. he could be a major upgrade over Roberts.

Posh and Wusu are 3 star kids. Is the reason they are not 4 or 5 star kids is that they cant shoot? Oh please I hope that is not it.
Josh Roberts just put up 16 and 8 against a good Seton Hall team. He has improved his game tremendously this season and is only a sophomore. I have a feeling he's going to be a very valuable player for St. John's in his junior and senior seasons.

We'll need that consistently from him.
Heron and LJ had good games, they gotta get consistent as well.

Crazy how far we've fallen from just 3 weeks ago where we were all thinking "Wow! We're about to beat #11 Butler and should be ranked!". Now I doubt we'll even make the NIT. Reminds me of 2 years ago where we went 11-2 OOC (including a win vs #4 Duke) but lost 11 straight to start conference play.

As for next year, we do have a good incoming class (ranked #64 on 247 but not counting the 2 JUCOs). Even with the JUCOs I'm not convinced yet that it'll be a "great" class and I don't expect us to win a lot of games. I am a little concerned that we don't appear to be in on any top 100 recruits for the foreseeable future. Both Lavin and Mullin immediately got a bunch of top 100 talent. Our 2 high school recruits are ranked #156 (Posh) and #370 (Wusu). Our 2 JUCOs are ranked #4 and #15 in the JUCO rankings. Historically speaking, I believe those represent role players rather than the leaders we desperately need. Which player is going to be our D'Angelo Harrison or Shamorie Ponds?

Trying to find a bright spot here, but I'm struggling. I don't think this fan base is prepared for another 4 year rebuild, and until we start adding a major piece or 2 to go along with our current recruiting, I'm not sold yet on our future.

Not trying to be overly negative here as nobody is happy with how this season is going, but I'm just giving my honest opinion.

I wrote something very similar earlier, not realizing I was on a rookie forum thread. It's not unreasonable that it will take four years for things to actually turn - if at all. Also that its gotten old. But I believe CMA is a solid coach and nothing that has transpired in the past 20 years is his doing.

For this year I do think the early BE schedule has been rough for a bottom half team. All road games are going to be a problem and the home losses have been to Seton Hall and Butler. Next home game is Villanova. At that point SJU might well be 1-8 in conference with all three home conference losses to the top three ranked teams in the league. The good news about that is there will still be nine more conference games left. Can CMA hold the team together and keep getting this effort? If so and the team goes 4-5 in the second half this season is a lot more fun for everyone.
