I know it's hackneyed and an oversimplification...but just think Lavin needs to rally kids with an "us against the world...stick together...let's show 'em...all-in...etc..." approach...we're in trouble...staff and team know it...they see the negative press we are receiving...

nothing else has worked,,,so can't get any worse

I agree with you, but people can't say it enough ... Lavin needs to put them in a position to win. Losing a competitive basketball game is nothing that a coach or team has to apologize for. However, not putting a true point guard on the floor for basically 30 straight minutes is. Misusing timeouts at the end of a half is. Putting Hooper in at the end of a game when he clearly has no ball handling skills is.

I see a lot of talented or athletic or whatever the hell you want to call them players on the floor for St. John's. I see them with their own unique set of skills. What I don't see is the coaching staff utilizing those skills on a consistent basis. Jordan and Branch being benched for half the game. Greene (who contrary to most people, I do like) being misused day in and day out. Yes, I like Greene. I think he's a useful 10-15 minute type of player. What I don't like is Greene being expected to handle PG duties when he clearly is not a PG and everybody watching them can see it. Sampson and Sanchez consistently catching the ball on the wings when it is clear as day they are not wing players. The complaints go on. I understand that Lavin can't physically go out there and play for them, but a good coach (especially after a few years of working with these kids) should have an idea on how to use them properly.

The point is the inability of STEVE to use whatever skills these players have in some sort of organized style of play. You would think Lavin would want the players to go up and down the court at a breakneck pass. You would think he would try some sort of press to bring a semblance of defensive intensity, which is lacking.

Among the most frustrating things for us fans, is that 3 seasons in with these players, they aren't doing anything different on the Court than they did as freshman...Most good Coaches establish a style of play and just re-tool with players that fit that system. Steve doesn't seem to know how to install a system that fits these handpicked players abilities.

Even NBA Teams run set plays . WE don't have any.. Principles of Coaching 101 might be a good read for STEVE.. i DOUBT HE'S READ IT.

When things go bad it is only natural to blame the coach but while some of that is warranted I think the main reason for the disappointing season is the failure of the players to develop physically and improve their skills.
Everyone knew Sampson needed 30 lbs. on his frame to become a top player but he can't gain the weight.
Branch and Greene have not been able to raise their game. I attended the SJU vs. San Fran St. exhibition game back in Nov. and left the game thinking their backcourt personnel were stronger ,just as good ball handlers and much better shooters. I believe they are a div. 2 team and yet I think Lavin would have traded ours for theirs. It is mind boggling how Branch was rated a top ten point guard recruit. their blackout men were both stronger and much better outside shooters

Of course it is normal to blame the coach when things don't go well because he is the coach and his job is to win as many games as possible.
Let's stop to look at the facts :

Last year we had a winning record by the smallest of margins.
We returned absolutely everyone of consequence.
Last year our two point guards were hurt.
This year both of those players are healthy.
In case Branch and Greene are not good enough we added the third best pg in the high school ranks. That is not me or any other delusional St. John's fan speaking but the experts, the same experts who predicted Ryaherd would win Big East rookie of the year.
Last year the Big East was brutal.
This year the Big East is no where near the conference it was.
Last year our best player was suspended towards the end of the season for conduct detrimental to the team.
This year he has not engaged in similar behaviour.
This year our coach added a very highly respected assistant to his staff to replace one of his cronies.
This year we have been injury free.
This year we took a trip to Europe and got in a bunch of practices before other teams did.
I could go on and on but there is no point. The facts speak for themselves , we should win 5-6 more games than last season and anything less is a travesty.

You want to put the blame on the kids, that is your right and privilege but in my opinion it all lies with the staff

I'm in agreement mode today. While I still support the staff and believe that they will get it done in the long run, your observations about misuse of the players is dead on, Doody. Also, it was presented in a level headed, non-hysterical way.

Absolutely. Plus, we replaced Garrett with Sanchez. How in the world are they having a worse season this year than last. That is what I want to hear answered by Lavin. That's why this season is completely disheartening.

I think because we are so deep and there isn't much difference between the players. It still isn't clear who the best 5 is. I think all this lineup shuffling is messing up the chemistry. I also blame the coaching staff, they aren't developing the players.

Funny I thought this was a thread about a point forward we were recruiting.
How silly of me to think we were recruiting

Speaking of point forwards, I'm really impressed by the maturity and leadership of Kyle Anderson.

Love him or hate him, the kid has a winning attitude on the court. And a high basketball IQ.

Our recruiting "philosophy" does not place a high emphasis on headiness.

Our point forward Sanchez is out there playing like he's in a rec league.
