After Georgetown Coach John Thompson takes the court wearing a replica of St. John's coach Lou Carnesecca's lucky sweater, Thompson's No. 2 Hoyas beat Carnesecca's Np. 1 Redmen, 85-69, at Madison Square Garden.

I was there and that game still hurts !!

Hard to describe the pre-game atmosphere. It was almost like a championship prize fight.

Ouch! Saturday, let's avenge the sweater.

Agree wholeheartly. Certainly wouldn't match Ali-Frazier but the aura around MSG that nightwas unbelievable. Based on the failure of the Knick's for most of the last thirty years it has to be one of the biggest basketball nights in MSG history.
I was offered eight hundred dollars for four twenty dollar seats. Couldn't disappoint my kids.

My source was a "blurb" in today's Wall Street Journal.

Guess they are going by the day of the week comapred with the actual date.

I thought for a second you might be right, because the 25th was a Monday that year, and it would have been a natural for the ESPN "Big Monday" game.

Ironically, UCONN at BC was the "Big Monday" game that week. Odd choice on the face of it, but back then, I think ESPN tried to make sure that every team got on Big Monday at least once.

I can't give you a thank you for reminding me of that. I was there. It was the most painful loss in our recent history bar none, even the final four. My buddy almost got into a fight as we were getting our butts kicked when a fan behind him lit a cigarette (this was just after smoking was banned in the arena).

We might as well play a clip of FDR saying, "This day will live in infamy"

You're getting a minus 1 JSJ. Probably your first ever.

I, too, was there and the tension prior to the game was palpable. I have to admit, Thompson pulling that stunt did serve to relieve the feeling a bit. That being said, losing was probably worse than winning down there (which I also attended) since their winning spread was 16 and our win was by the skin of our teeth and you knew we'd see them again.

If memory serves, I think the game down there was one where we let a pretty decent lead slip away but after the Hoyas' last score, the game clock was winding down since it did not stop after a basket and Mullin just sort of looked at the clock and put the ball down since he didn't have to throw it in.

At least that's how I prefer to remember it 30 years later... ;)

I was there at the Garden and hated that game so much.

what a buildup, the local press and t.v. stations were all over that game and that SJU team.

ESPN was started by UCONN fans and was literally started for the sole purpose of airing UCONN sports. Obviously got bigger than that but I always felt that the original UCON affiliation remained and ESPN helped build yukon basketball as a sort of propaganda machine ;)

remember sitting there stunned when we got down so much

Love Coach Lou, but I think a big mistake that year was his overuse of senior Mike Moses versus sophomore Mark Jackson.

I watched every game that year as a little kid, but I always thought we were better most of the time when Action Jackson was running the point. He was definitely stronger against the Pearl and Michael Jackson. The only matchup I liked Moses better was versus speedy Michael Adams of BC.

That year we had everyone's number, really all the other teams in the country except for Georgetown.

I didn't like the matchups and their physical play did us in.

Georgetown using Mullin like a pinball didn't help us either.
