[/b] I remember my first and last opportunity to play a Catholic High School playoff game at the old Madison Garden. Couldn't wait to arrive and practice shots before our game against Louie's St. Ann's Stanners. Well , lo and behold, I couldn't find an open door to get in. Finally, as I hurried to get out on the court I took one practice shot and heard the buzzer to start the game.So much for warm up for the big game.

Don't leave us in suspense, how did you and your team do?
 
They played Molloy,.before the years they usually would lose to Christ the King. So,
unless he was on Power Memorial's Alcindor team in the early 60s, he lost.

(just kidding all the non-stanners of course)

We were down by two at halftime and lost by 11. Not bad for a small division school against the loaded division 1 school at St. Ann's. I scored only 7 playing the back of the zone at 5'11" Not to make an excuse but my coach switched me from shooting guard to small forward..Had we pulled an upset we would have faced St. Francis Prep with Alfieri and the Stith brothers.
 
This brings back memories. I was in the 8th grade when my father to me to the Garden on December 31, 1960 for the Holiday Festival Final between St Bonaventure with Tom Stith, Whitey Martin, and Fred Crawford against Ohio State with Jerry Lucas, John Havilcek, Larry Sigfried, and Bobby Knight. Ohio st won 84-82. After the game we walked to Times Square to watch the Ball drop.

Another memorable game at the Old Garden that I saw was Coach Lapchick's last game, the 1965 NIT Championship against Villanova. At that time, Kenny McIntyre was my favorite college basketball player.

Hard to imagine any prep basketball conference that could have surpassed the CHSAA, of the 60s and 70s.
 
Also at Lapchick's last game, watching NYU lose to Army by 1 pt. in the consolation game for the second year in a row.
 
BTW, after playing shooting guard all season then switching in the playoffs to small forward didn't make sense, especially since I never worked out of the corner. Plus guess who guarded me in the playoff game - York Larese. Remember him?
