The Wild West Part 2

So yesterday the NCAA reached an agreement with the DOJ wherein they agree they will no longer try to force multi-transfer kids to have to sit a year.

So basically this ends the federal lawsuit from last year that made players who otherwise had to sit a year immediately eligible.

So now it is official you can transfer any number of times and never have to sit a year.

The next thing will be the Portal Windows.

At what point does someone say, "Hey you can't restrict me from being able to transfer with an arbitrary window date?" Lawsuit...

Do think its fair to point out that the NCAA is making these settlements so they can wink wink at Congress that they're a trusted actor who should get the antitrust exemption, and thus, make those rules about transfers/NIL/etc.

What about trades, cuts, and buyouts.

I for one don't think the NCAA is a trusted actor, so I have no idea what they would actually institute if given the legal right to set up a system. If I had to guess and hope, it would be more akin to the European soccer posting system with contracts/buyouts/etc.

Trades and midseason moves would be horrible.

Since education is still involved "i guess lol" i dont think trades or mid season moves would happen. However, I can agree that this might be a thing in the future the way this is going. IM all for kids getting money for the video games etc... that are using their names aka NIL. Butttt many often forget they are also getting a free scholarship, free room and board, etc... College is not cheap. Just trying to shed some perspective as well.

On a further note I never understood why transferring to be closer to home because your Mom is sick requires you to play immediately?

Like what is the connection?

So a kid from Philly going to school in the SEC decides to transfer to Villanova because his Mom has been sick. OK fair enough. You can transfer and be on scholarship and go to school closer to home and be near your family. OK but for the peace of your mind you also need to play immediately or else your Mom won't get healthy???? Huh...?

How does sitting a year or not help/hurt your Mom?

When my son was a junior in college he transferred home as his Mom had Stage 3 cancer. He played basketball (D3 but NCAA rules) at the time and the last thing we would have considered with all that was going on was wanting immediate eligibility. We were grateful for the year to concentrate on our family issues. I have never understood the idea of this waiver which is completely backwards.

Does this mean Jenkins gets another year?

The idea is the kid wouldn’t transfer except for the fact a close family member is seriously ill and he needs to be there so he shouldn’t be penalized. Not hard for me to understand. I think it’s called empathy

You are not being penalized. You are allowed to be close to home.

You are acting like they lose a year of eligibility in that case you would be penalized. Sitting a year and being close to home while still maintaining all your eligiblity is hardly a penalty.

Be clear I don't personally have an issue with it, I just found it odd that people would argue that he should be allowed to play because his mom is sick. Huh? What in God's name does playing immediately have to do with a sick mom?

Why?

Here is what I believe it means.

Let's say you transferred for the 2nd time in 2022. You are forced to sit because you used your 1 time free transfer the previous year. So you sit for the 22-23 season.

I believe what this settlement says is, "You know what you should not have been forced to sit that year. And so retroactively we are going to give you that year back as a free year."

It means you have to stay an extra year in college to use your eligibility. Which everyone might not want to do. So if like he said, the only reason he is transferring is to be closer to home then why penalize him by staying an extra year in college. And yes I know not everyone looks at that as “penalizing” and I would agree.

Ok but that is hardly a penalty. Plenty of kids redshirt some out of necessity some because they are asked too.

Again my point is the connection, not that it would not be a nice gesture.

A kid gets hurt in the middle of a year and asks for an extra year of eligiblity because of injury. There is a direct connection between the injury and losing the rest of that year. So the NCAA can give him relief.

There is no loss here of eligiblity due to the transfer. More importantly the kid can be close to home just as he wants.'

The issue is immediate eligiblity which is not directly connected to the health of a family member.

Again you can argue it is a nice gesture that is fine it is hardly required to be close to home.

Yeah like I said I don’t think staying in college an extra year is a penalty or getting a full year to train is a bad thing.

But you don’t think there’s a situation where because of extreme circumstances of a sick parent a kid would feel the need to transfer closer to home AND finish their degree as quick as possible? And in which case, if legitimate, they should get penalized by either staying an extra year or losing a year of playing?

Yes it’s asking a lot but that’s what these were for. The issue is people stretching it and misusing it to any advantage they can.

Sure, I could a C student at Grand Canyon University transferring mid semester to Cal Berkeley and all his GCU courses being accepted.......and the kid would have no academic adjustment problems.🤓
Then again, colleges have become so corrupt when it comes to athletes qualifying that it wouldn't surprise if that kid got straight A's.......
