Love GI as a kid. It was funny and Maryanne was hot as hell. Also had a connection to the show because my Dad was friends with Russ Johnson from their younger days is aspiring actors n LA. In the cast photo, that's Russ standing 2nd from right with arms folded in white shirt. My Pops knelling 2md from left in black leather. In the other pic, my Dad far left and Russ right next to him. Not sure Fuchsia. Some of my Dad's photos are labeled, some are not. This would have been circa 1950 in LA. Very cool that your Dad worked with those legends. My Dad was friends with a lot of B list actors. Guys like Harry Guardino, Al Hedison, Dana Andrews, etc. He actually went out to LA because his Brooklyn buddy, Nicky Blair(not his real name) was out there and encouraged my Dad to come out. Nicky became a bit actor. His biggest role was probably as "Shorty", Elvis's sidekick in Viva Las Vegas. Nicky wound up become a pretty well known restauranteur in LA. Real good guy. Passed away a number of years ago.fuchsia post=440279 said:Monte, what show is the top photo from? My dad had connections with the Group Theater and Odets, Lee J. Cobb, and John Garfield.
How dare you label the late great Harry Guardino as a B list actor. /media/kunena/emoticons/wink.png/media/kunena/emoticons/smile.pngMonte post=440280 said:Not sure Fuchsia. Thanks so much Firestormfirestorm post=440284 said:Great stories and pix, Monte. thanks for sharing.
Also, one more for Team Maryanne.
I never said he wasn't a good actor or that he wasn't in some good films, but he was never ever an A list actor. Heres his obit from LA Times;AlBovino post=440287 said:Shame on you if you consider Dana Andrews a "B" actor. Do some homework and identify some of the fine movies he was in.
If there's one thing Monte does is his homework. We'll just have to resign ourselves to the fact that Dana, Harry and Monte are B list actors. /media/kunena/emoticons/smile.pngAlBovino post=440287 said:Shame on you if you consider Dana Andrews a "B" actor. The point of me showing that list was not to highlight and debate the actors on it, but to show, roughly, what makes up each category. Again, IMO Andrews was a very good actor who appeared in some very good films, I'm not debating that. But he was NEVER an A lister by the standards of then or now. Maybe he would have been had alcohol not gotten in the way, but he wasn't.SLYFOXX1968 post=440298 said:The period in Hollywood where Dana Andrews played most of his roles was different than today or even , yesterday . Sure Dana was never in the category of Gable , Gary Cooper ,, Burt Lancaster , Mitchum, Gregory Peck , etc but , he was a fine Actor and played in many fine Movies . 2 of his outstanding roles were in Best Years and Laura . Plus , a number of very good Film Noir roles which Eddie Muller on TCM will vouch for … Also too, that list that included Pitt, DiCaprio, Depp , Jolie , Streep , etc is out of date . None of that group would qualify as A list Today . They got OLD . All in their 50’s or more and not getting A list roles anymore . Being A list isn’t a Lifetime gig … it has expiration dates .
Agreed. There's def some gray in that rating system. Also theres always movement. Travolta has gone from A list, to off the list, then back to probably B list(with Pulp Fiction). Maybe there should be C+, B+, etc. lol.L J S A post=440315 said:Calling Nic Cage an A-lister sounds weird, but he definitely seems above the B list.
