The most overpaid coach - Steve Lavin

Does anybody know exactly how much is Steve Lavin's annual salary at St. John's? If his annual salary is about $1 million, he is the most overpaid coach in college hoops.

According to the article I read when he signed originally his contract was for six years for nine million dollars

I have found it. (This is 2012 figure)

1. Jay Wright - Villanova - $2,290,346

2. John Thompson III - Georgetown - $2,211,250

3. Oliver Purnell - DePaul - $2,192,385

4. Buzz Williams - Marquette - $1,105,203 in base and $631,250 paid to "Team Buzz Williams L.P." or $1,736,453

5. Steve Lavin - St. John's - $1,413,952

6. Greg McDermott - Creighton - $1,369,949

7. Keno Davis - Providence - $889,930 (obviously Ed Cooley is the coach now but I would suspect it'll be something similar to this)

8. Brad Stevens - Butler - $853,397

9. Kevin Willard - Seton Hall - $722,509

10. Chris Mack - Xavier - $484,399

When Lavin was hired, word at the time was that we he was offered around $2million. But Lavin also wanted to bring Dunlap, Keady, Hines, etc. in and the budget wasn't big enough-so he agreed to knock down his pay a bit.

Lavin's still making more than triple what Roberts was.

So what. He earned every penny for the press he brought St. John's. Roberts good press was restricted to Springfield Gardens.

How has he earned every penny because of good press?
That's absurd. And I don't know if you've noticed, but the press doesn't seem to give a damn anymore. Thats what 3 losing seasons does

He hooked the fans and media with a lot of bs and hot air. But everyone is catching on to his act real quick this season ...

Not so fast. Do you remember even hearing about St. John's outside of Newsday and the Post during Roberts era. I have seen more articles and programs and mentions in the last few years than anytime in the previous 8 years. If you haven't noticed Fox sports is just about begging SJU to win. Nothing but complimentary quotes from and about Lavin and his background. It is taking time but it will all be there. Don't you think this staff is pulling their hair out trying to correct this thing.
Their jobs are on the line everyday in the public's eye. You know all involved are very disappointed in what has taken place this season but you either give up or it makes you stronger.
in the last few years

Salty, you seem like a nice guy but I think you've lost touch with reality a little bit. If you said let's wait and see if he can turn things around this season and create some momentum.. Ok, I could understand that. Reasonable opinion.
But Steve Lavin has certainly not earned his salary. The team isn't losing because there are 4k people at Alumni Hall, they're losing because they can't execute.
And the good press was great at first, but now it's coming off as disingenuous. There are always excuses, and ridiculous platitudes. What he's saying doesn't even make sense anymore: Ndaye is starting because he had a good week of practice? Jordan is better than Jason Kidd yet he plays him 13mins? Felix deserved to be activated and he foresaw a role for him yet now he's collecting DNPs? The train is coming off the tracks and it has nothing to do with the losing that occurred under Jarvis and Norm.

Reasonable people can disagree about how much leash to give him, but nobody's who's been paying attention shouldn't be very concerned about the direction of the program.

And I agree with you, and appreciate that the staff recognizes the problems and they're trying to address them. I don't doubt that.
What I and some others doubt is that they're capable of fixing anything, because....well, they haven't. These issues are not new.

Good points Desco. I know most people I've talked to are very disappointed in Lavin and want him gone but I have seen 4 wrong hires and Lavin is the first guy where they seem to be trying. We shall see what we shall see as the saying goes.

paying that kind of $$$ for Press Relations is way too much. I thought he was suppose to Coach Basketball. The headlines we're now making in the Press with STEVE as Coach are about as bad as the press we got with Norm.. Mostly the Press were kind to Norm

If the losing continues , I doubt they will be as soft on Lavin.. He hyped the Program before he had enough wins in the Bank and now it looks like he just a tub thumper, without portfolio.

The LIONS are circling. Already seeing criticism from guys like Gottlieb, Davis, Darcy, etc. IT won't be long before Digger, Dickie V, Jay Bilas will be commenting as well.

I mean 0-5 with this team is a disgrace at this juncture.

Does anyone think the players are as down on where we are right now as the posters on this board are?

Yea he is a really bad guy and snakeoil salesman. He is talentless huckster who has been so lucky in his life. He may not be the coach for this team, but reaching the expectations of these boards, was a losing proposition for most of the coaches who we would have gotten this job. To recruit an entire team with the expectation that we we would in the NCAA's in his third year was a pipe dream at best. All the coaches that are being mentioned Masiello, Hurley and Smart to replace maybe better, I would haved like to see how they would have done recruiting an entire team in basically one year.

Yes this year has been a brutal disappointment, but the attacks on him have gone overboard. I went to the Georgetown game and walked out at half time, so I am not blind to what is going on.

He isn't overpaid, it is what the market dictated at the time, especially when you are asking some one to turn around a losing culture of 20 years. Turning around a losing culture is brutal, most attempts don't succeed, because most people don't have the patience to see it through. There is so much more to it than what we see on the surface.

So keep blasting away if it makes you feel better.

He had to be armed when he was working his deal with the Depaul Ad.

The way things are looking, you will probably get that chance.

From ESPN athttp://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/colleges/post/_/id/6568/w2w4-st-johns-vs-dartmouth

"EIGHT IS ENOUGH: Lavin continues to tinker with different lineups and combinations -- he used his ninth different starting five (in 17 games) in the loss to Providence. It's time (way past time, in fact) to establish a regular rotation."

"An eight-man rotation, with defined roles for each player, could lead to much-improved chemistry."

This is just so basic. The fact that we're even having this discussion at this juncture in the season is mind boggling.
