The First Coaches Poll for the 2014 Season

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/ncaab/polls/

Only 1 Big East team (Marquette) 3 others receiving votes (Villanova, G'Town & Creighton)

Blah. Blah Never put much stock in their polls They are as often wrong as I am

Happy that Wisconsin is ranked. Will pay dividends if we can pull out a W.

Wish they were ranked even higher. That first game is big.

Agreed, lets wait and see where things stand come January & February

The first game of the year isn't big. Yeah, it would be great to win but if STJ losses it's not the end of the season.

You should probably stay away from the site then if we lose :)

It certainly is big because it is against a top 25 team from a BCS conference. Lots to gain from beating them.

In the big picture I agree, but it is huge in terms of ranking. Perception is everything with rankings...especially early on. If you look at what SJU has after Wisconsin, they will be the favorties in every game until Syracuse.

A loss game one makes us irrevlevant until Syracuse. A win and the press about the potential, players coming of age, Harrison a changed man, etc., etc. etc. wil be everywhere. I am very happy that Wisconsin is ranked, but they will be a formidable foe game one. Ryan can coach his arse off.

Dekker is a beast too. Check him and our day will be a bit smoother. Gotta try to run on them.

This post is spot on. About how this would be a huge win for us and for the conference.

And that bo Ryan is a hell of a coach. Pound for pound the best coach in the country IMO. Top four finish in the big10 every year he's been at Wisconsin. Wisconsin!

They've made the tournament TWELVE years in a row under Ryan...all twelve years he's been there. That is incredible. It's not like they have Syracuse type talent going in every year. Even Syracuse hasn't been on that type of run with all the talent they've had.

Yea unbelievable. Boring smoring. I like scoring as much as anyone but nothing is as fun as winning.

I also think the first game this year is particularly important because our guys could definately use the confidence boost that would come with a nice win over a ranked opponent. And I don't mean confidence in the sense of the bravado guys exhibit in the quotes they give to reporters, but the confidence to make quick decisions on the court.

A good win will hopefully prevent the guys from second guessing themselves and being so methodical on offense. We've seen that too much the last few years. They get a little confidence and they should be able to make the quick passes and player looser.

they better win. I just dropped 650 on 3 court side. The last thing I want to do is drive home 10 hours after a loss with my wife and son through South Dakota.

Bo Ryan teams make mincemeat out of low BB IQ teams. We've had low IQ teams for probably 85 percent of the last 20 years. Hopefully we have more than athleticism going for us by the first game.

We probably have a better chance of beating Cuse in mid December than Wisconsin in early November. Integrating all these pieces is not going to be easy during game #1.

Disagree. This is the advantage of the summer play. Regardless of the level of competition, our guys had more time to work together as a team.

Strongly disagree! We just had two extra weeks of practice and 5 games against professional teams. We have three new guys they've never seen and a new system that even the fans don't know about. We know what Bo Ryan will do and we've seen their guys together. Advantage St. John's.

It's even bigger than you think. The whole team has been gearing for this game since the summer.
They know what is at stake and they are confident and prepared to compete. Even Lavin has it circled.
This is the benchmark they looking for. I just hope if they lose that it doesn't deflate them too much.
Lavin will definitely have to be on the team's pulse win or lose.
