The Demise of West Coast College Basketball ?

"Out West, it’s much more high-flying, up and down, long, athletic. Back East, it’s big, strong, physical, grind it out.”

That quote about West Coast basketball sounds a lot like us. If this premise is true, we may be in trouble.

Very interesting article, with extremely interesting theories. Thanks for sharing!
One thing that I noticed: while UCLA and Arizona can stand up to any team most years, there is a huge disparity in the quality of the mid majors out west, compared to their counterparts in the East and MidWest.
The Western mids are garbage. The WCC, Mountain West, etc conferences stink. They are nowhere near the quality of the A-10, Colonial, etc.

I get to see quite a bit of Pac 12, Mountain West and West Coast Conf. games, and they have underperformed in post-season play. They have plenty of talent spread around the upper halves of each league, but beyond the defense not being at a par with the Big East, A-10 and Colonial, the quality of the coaching is inferior. UNLV and SD State are loaded with talent (the rebels have three McD. All-Americans), but they are usually early outs in the ncaa. The rosters also are filled with transfers from other programs, which is not the best way to build a roster.

Well, USF cleaned our clock in the pre-conference season and Murray State did too.. High flying gazelles who can'r put the ball in the ocean..That's been our stigmata.

I think Lavin's 8 years at ESPN and not Coaching did not give him a good basis for BE play, which is very physical.

Looking at the Sweet 16,Elite 8 and Final 4 reveals a number of pertinent items to have on a team, if you want to be a premier program.

1. Someone who can drain a 3 . Preferably several players who can shoot it, when necessary. It's a part of the game, you have to have it in your game plan.
2. Have a Mid West Farmer's son playing center. Criteria= 6'10" or more, 245 plus pounds who can play the game and have fundamentals down pat. McGARY on Michigan is just one of the prototypes that Lavin should be recruiting. Cody Zeller is a similiar player L'ville's second team center,Van Geese or something like that . G'town has Lubick who fits that bill too. Batts at Providence. Keady knows this from Purdue but, I guess Lavin is too West Coast to listen? Wichita had some beef too, inside. Get out into the cornfields Steve. KIDS IN iOWA, Indiana, Illinois,OHIO KNOW HOW TO PLAY TOO
3. Have someone on your bench who can shoot 3's from the corner.. Hancock, Henderson on L'ville. Michigan, which is in fact the YOUNGEST TEAM IN BB, has several kids off the bench who lit it up..Wichita also had several kids to lit it up.
4. FREE THROWS are a must have. You must be able to shoot 65-70% as a team as a minimum.
5. Play in your jock defense all game with ability to mix it up.

Perhaps many have forgotten our losses to USF, Murray State, Baylor because they had kids who could shoot. We had no answer offensively or defensively.

I just hope that Hooper is anywhere close to Albrecht on Michigan, or Henderson on L'ville or, Heslip on Baylor or, Doolan on USF OR, Craft on Ohio State or Hulls on Indiana or, Ryan A on Nova.. We'll see in November.. Can Lipscomb shoot 3's?
