The decision of Walter Berry to SJU

beast of the east

Some of you may know this story, but as the Briscoe decision winds down, it's worth repeating. I heard it from a very credible source, actually one of the parties to the story.

As the Walter Berry sweepstakes were in the final days, there were a few schools still in the hunt, notably, St. John's and Villanova.

Berry was at a tournament where all the finalists recruiting him were attending. He was alone in his hotel room, and heard a knock on the door. When he opened the door, no one was there, but there was a brown paper bag on the floor outside his room. Walter took the bag, closed the door, and in the confines of his room, opened the bag.

Inside the bag was stuffed with cash, LOTS of it. More money than Berry had ever seen in his life. He almost fainted. He laid on his bed and threw it in the air, and the bills covered his body, the bed, and the floor. He started yelling, "I'm rich, I'm rich!", ecstatic over his new found wealth.

He laid there in his delirium, and in a few moments, the phone in his room rang. "I'm calling from the NCAA, and I saw what was left at your door. If you want to play a minute of basketball ever again in the United States, you will return that money immediately, or you will be suspended and ruled ineligible."

In a panic, Berry scooped up the cash, making sure not to miss a single bill. He stuffed it into the bag, and put the bag outside the door. A few minutes later the generous "donor" called and identified what school the money came from. In a panic, Berry told him he wasn't interested, and to take the money back immediately.

Shortly after, Berry declared his intention to attend St. John's. Years later, he found out that the NCAA official who called him was actually SJU assistant Ron Rutledge, Today the two are the closest of friends, and Rutledge will tell you that Walter was his favorite all-time SJU player. No wonder.

As Billy Packer once stated on a national televised game against Georgetown, "Walter Berry is a man among boys" He certainly was!!

I remember in the golden days of bigeastboards.com there was beef between two posters (I can't recall who they were) and one challenged the other to meet him on the street in Howard Beach. I'm starting to sense that same tension here.

Is one to deduce that the other school was a booster from Villanova?
Great story!

I don't quite understand this. Who is to have stopped St. John's from placing the money, and then being the ones posing as the NCAA and in turn leading him to believe the money came from a Nova booster?

back then their were no message boards but the speculation was all over on where Berry would end
up after San Jacinto CC. Most prognosticators had him going to Georgia to play for Hugh Durham who
might have been behind the payoff, which I also heard about. Looie was supposed to get Berry right out of HS but he didn't qualify and once headed out to the "world" chances diminished for St. John's.
Mullin always stated it was a shame that the NCAA messed with Berry and made him go the Juco route.

Unless I'm missing something, that's a very good point and would have been a brilliant move by Louie and co if that's what actually happened. Of course there are those on here who would have you believe that could have never ever happened the way you hypothesize.

Rutledge was clearly behind all the acts in the story.

Jerry Tarkanian, irate at having not gotten Berry to UNLV, stated that SJU cheated in their recruitment of Berry.

For the record Walter spent his freshman year at St.Johns. He spent only only one year at San Jacinto and interestingly with two summer schools he accumulated a great number of credits. Having spent a year at St. John's we were favored to resign him.

Great story!

That is not the Nova way of doing business. At State schools it is the norm.

Are you serious?
Ever hear of Howard Porter?
They got stripped of their final 4 berth.
Go ask your boy if don't remember.

Rollie was a little shady for sure, although Porter was not his problem.

All Howard did was sign a pro contract in his final year with a team he never ended up playing for and I do not recall Jack Kraft or Nova doing anything illegal during his recruitment unless one of you knows different.

Absolutely correct on your part, thanks. Nova had to vacate all wins in a year they went to the NCAA finals. Their coach, Jack Kraft, recently passed away, and the school President Father Peter Donohue issued the press release. I didn't realize that Porter was murdered in 2007.

To be clear, I'm not aware that Rollie was ever accused of any impropriety, and was based on opinion of someone I know that knew him.
