The battle over SJU.

For the longest time we all knew that SJU was St. Johns Several years ago someone in the athletic or marketing department at st Johns failed to renew the SJU logo as our trademark and St. Josephs of Philadelphia chose it as their logo. Thus we are not SJU but StJ .Lets make them pay for this act of piracy !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've always referred to St. John's as The Redmen or SJU...and always will! Strange that 'domain registration' requirements can supplant generation - decades-old marketing and brand identity.

Once St. Joe's had established itself as SJU, St. John's tried to rebrand itself rather than have their audience (and prospective students) go to St. Joe's website by typing www.sju.edu. I guess they could have paid St. Joe's for the rights to the domain name, but they probably hoped that the internet thing wouldn't last. :)

Lots of corporations had to buy website domain names. Delta Airlines bought Delta.com back (to their benefit, no matter what the cost). Some went to court and won without payment. I don't think this happened specifically, but think "Newyorkyankees.com" as deceiving the public to thinking that website was the official site. BAck then the internet was a wild wild west, and while we believe that sju.edu would naturally belong to St. John's, I guess St. Joseph's couldf equally claim rights to the same domain.
