Nothing new here, but another national outlet talking about this as the make-or-break year for Chris Mullin. From a discussion between Brian Hamilton and Dana O'Neil...

Speaking of ex-players turned coaches … Chris Mullin. Now or never, right? I mean now that Mustapha Heron is eligible.
BRIAN: To me this is a huge test of the school’s patience and loyalty basically to the guy who is synonymous with St. John’s basketball. I would not want to try to scheme against a backcourt of Shamorie Ponds and Mustapha Heron. That sounds extremely unpleasant. But that aside…man, if you can’t make a dent in the Big East this year, I don’t know what to tell you.
I don’t think the teams are bad. I just think it’s impossible to look at Villanova the same way or Xavier the same way, and while Marquette and Providence are promising, nothing is guaranteed there either. If St. John’s can’t ride guards like this to the top half of the Big East, when will it ever make noise?
DANA: Absolutely 100 percent agree. The Red Storm have caught the league in a transition year and have all of the pieces to win it. I mean, it’s hard to say it’s not Villanova’s year until it’s not Villanova’s year, but I went to their Hoops Mania and even I was taken aback when I realized how young the Wildcats are.
Plus, St. John’s hired a new athletic director — Mike Cragg from Duke — which makes it even easier for a change, if necessary. A chance to put his stamp on things and not to mention, maybe lure someone with some Blue Devil strings. Gotta win this year for Mullin, no matter how awkward the divorce might be.
