The Athletic recently posted an article wherein 7 college basketball writers ranked the top men’s college basketball programs into six tiers.
The schools included in the rankings included all Power 6 teams, plus any school outside of that group that ranked in the top 80 of KenPom’s program ratings (which tracks every team since 1997), and any team that has won a national title since 1980. The article's author, Dana O'Neil admitted that "the entire exercise is laughably impossible". Hey, it does make good click bait during the down holiday season.
Because the article is behind a "pay wall" I am unable to post the entire article but a quick summary places our beloved Johnnies in the unflattering (albeit realistic) 5th Tier.
The Big East teams rank out as follows:
Tier #1 has six schools which includes Yukon.
Tier #2A has five schools which includes Villanova.
Tier 2B has one school which is Gonzaga.
Tier #3 has fifteen schools which includes Georgetown and Marquette (plus the University of Syracuse).
Tier #4 has twenty schools which includes Creighton, Providence, Xavier (plus Notre Dame).
Tier #5 has twenty-eight schools which include: Arizona State, Butler, BYU, Clemson, Colorado, Florida State, Georgia Tech, LSU, UMiami, Mississippi State, NC State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Pitts, Rutgers, St. Mary's, Seton Hall, St. John's, Stanford, TCU, Texas A&M, USC, UNLV, USC, Utah, Utah State, VaTeck, Wake, UWashington .
Tier#6 has fifteen schools which includes DePaul (plus Boston College and Penn State).
The most interesting part of the article is the 475 reader's comments in which readers passionately argue that their respective schools should be placed higher.
