The 6th Borough / UConn

Was heading into The Lincoln Tunnel tonight and saw a sign announcing UConn as The 6th Borough.

Back in the 90's they did have a big contingent. Since leaving the Big East and Calhoun retiring, not so much. They don't have the same fervent traveling fan base as in the past.

American conference expected to get 1 or 2 bids again this year. UConn isn't one of them.

I always think of Storrs as the 6th borough. I think I'd prefer Newark to Storrs, or Camden.

When you are northeast of Hartford, you grasp at anything. Might as well say they are a suburb of Boston. TBH, house is the worst part of the Bronx are more expensive then anywhere in Storrs. I I would guess most of their CT fans rarely venture into NYC beyond visiting MSG for a game

"The term sixth borough is used to describe any of a number of places that have been referred to as a part of New York City because of its geographic location, population, demographics, special affiliation, or cosmopolitan character. They have included adjacent cities and counties in the New York Metropolitan Area as well as in other states, U.S. territories, and foreign countries.

[...]

Places outside of the New York metropolitan area that are home to large populations of former residents of New York have also been referred to as a sixth borough, including Philadelphia and Miami and outside the continental U.S., Puerto Rico and Israel."

Storrs is so far outside of Hartford that they should be an outer borough of that dumpy city.

I could understand this sign a whole lot more back in the heyday of the Big East when UConn was winning and had great teams. They did a good job of moving people down to NYC with the buses and the PBR.

They filled the bars around the Garden that's for sure.

Honestly, even back then, I never thought of them as a "borough", and I don't think they draw a huge part of their student body from the NYC metro area. I don't feel that NYC people relate to that school.

Syracuse has a larger claim to being a 6th Borough than UConn.
