Keep coming out of woodwork

@jeffborzello: Tennessee freshman Tariq Owens has asked for his release after meeting with Rick Barnes today, sources told ESPN.

Will visit St. John's.

Avg 1ppg/1rpg on a .500 team.
. Yeah, but he barely played except spot minutes. Would people really mind having a kid like this coming off the bench or improving and gaining strength and improving with the year off? It would also help spread ships out. I'd have no problem. It see,s he has talent but hasn't yet had a chance to utilize it.

Strategy is to balance roster with several transfers who will sit out in addition to getting immediate help.

Seems like the type of big man Mullin used to draft for the Warriors. Raw lengthy athlete with defensive upside. Biedrins, Chris Taft, Patrick O'Bryant, Brandan Wright, and Stephane Lasme are examples. Those guys don't quite work in the NBA a lot of the time, but they can be good in college.

I've never seen this kid play but don't like the way this sounds. If you are good enough you will play, if you aren't, get better! Don't worry about being recruited over. Think we are not going to try to bring in more players? May want to go down a level rather than the Big East.

I certainly wouldn't guarantee him any playing time but maybe sitting out a year will get him to refocus. I trust the staff's judgement to determine if he fits at this level.

I didn't get the vibe that he wanted guaranteed playing time, just wanted to know that he is a player that they had in mind. It seemed like they couldn't tell him what kind of role he would get/compete for which means he either is not in their plans at all or they haven't done much research on the team yet. Either way, when all your supporters are going to be gone and you're far away from home, sometimes you want to move closer and somewhere you are recruited to.

As far as a player, he looks to be very long and athletic. Had 0.5 blocks in 7 minutes and with a year under Mullin should get stronger and better by the time he could play. I'd take him.

I don't know whether this kid can contribute here or not. That I'll leave to the staff to decide. But after the last few years, I find myself getting all excited over every recruit simply because they're not a walk-on

I can't remember the last time we had too many 6'10 guys.
Nice to have the problem of having big men want to transfer to SJU. Very nice sign of things to come

After seeing what this kid averaged I'm not surprised Barnes didn't offer any encouraging news. I think we can do better then just settling for any 6'10" player.

We are in the fortunate position of not having to settle for any 6'10 player that shows interest. Amar is around for three years, ADR (if qualified) for four. We'll likely sign a 6'8 JUCO in the next few days with three years left and, of course, we are a finalist for Diallo and still in the hunt for others.

Impressing Mullin with his character and desire to get better and be a part of a team is the first step.

What, you weren't impressed with our "not your average walk-ons"?

lol.

i thought I saw this kid was a 4-star prospect out of HS. Anyway, if CM doesn't make any promises and this kid comes onboard how in the world would it be a negative? He'll add depth at the very least and at best he develops while sitting out a year and becomes a big man who can get some meaningful burn out there
