Tariq Owens, Very Valuable Guy

It seems most of his blocks are spectacular. He has a knack for charging up court when a sure layup or dunk on a breakaway is about to happen, and completely smothering the shot without fouling. he also has a soft touch from the baseline 12-14 feet and in.

And also nice form at the foul line. Aside from keeping the team healthy, I still think key to us having a very successful year is Tariq and Clark both being able to stay on the court for at least 24-25 minutes per game.

Tariq Owens' last five games as a starter for St. John's: 10.0 PPG, 6.6 RPG, 4.2 BPG. Has changed entire team with his defense at the rim. #SJUBB

Tariq has worked very hard here. I remember seeing pictures from his father showing the kid working out last summer in the gym. Seems like a good kid and his father appeared to be involved and proud of his son. I am happy he is thriving at St. John's. We need more like him.

Yes Tariq's dad seems like a great guy and father and he remains unobtrusive and basically in the background. The anti-Lavar Ball and ain't that refreshing.

Tariq’s game is developing and has been transformative for the team. Looking forward to his future maturation and blossoming. He’ll be one tough senior.

He also has a nice mid range jump shot
His development over the past couple of years has been tremendous
Owens should be exhibit #1 to show recruits how they much they can improve at St John's
I would still like to see him add a few more pounds of muscle to better battle for rebounds

Just wanted to give props to Tariq Owens. The progression he has made since joining the team has been remarkable. An extremely hard working kid, great teammate, huge heart and gaining more confidence every game. When you see the videos his dad posted throughout the summer, showing that mid range jumper Tariq was working on; he was making it with regularity at practice, and it's starting to show in game play. He is having the confidence to take and make that shot more. His defense is tremendous, he has that passion and intensity you love on your team. 19 points, 14 rebounds, 4 blocks, 1 steal, hit 2-4 from 3. We have really hit homeruns with our transfers, but none bigger than Tariq Owens.

totally agree!! tweet him sometimes, seems like a great dude. Tariq, Simon, and Clark have been so much fun to watch and root for this year so far.

Enjoyed the posts here...
Our Coach has praised Tariq early and often! Good for TO and his Dad!!

I also liked CM’s take after the seton hall loss - to the effect that such losses played tough while short- handed - can only bode well for future Ws down the road. Our players will get it - how hard they need to play.

Seems to me no team
can be w/o it’s arguably best two
players and succeed...

And I suppose along w Ponds and Lovett- Tariq might be one of OR our best player :D

He's probably been my favorite player on the team this year. Has definitely made marked improvements and seems to have developed the most of any returner since last year IMO.

It’s been a pleasure to watch his development. Next year w additional weight and exp. , he could be a monster. Not only are we missing our best 2 players, but
Other than Yakwe , who is limited offensively. We have no bench, making it a very difficult situation presently.
The team played extremely hard against SHU and played admirably on the road.

Not sure whether Tariq has the ability to gain a lot more weight. But the improvement in his outside shot and ability to stay on the floor and avoid silly fouls has been striking. Have every reason to expect the offensive development will continue - would like to see a bit of a low post game next year as well. He has been a great find; look forward to watching him finish a great career with SJU.

Next summer should be all jump hook all the time. Learn it with both hands. With his height and wingspan it will be impossible to defend and he'll be shooting down at the basket! He does it now sometimes but tends to just chuck it up toward the basket. Learn it as a real shot and it will be unstoppable.

Think that may fall under the heading "Easier said than done.'
