Owens was originally recruited as a shot blocking forward to Ohio University & subsequently to Tennessee. Some posters feel he can possibly overtake Sima at center, but I just don't see it. He may have played well in intrasquad game last year, but I personally don't draw much from that. I once heard a local basketball guy describe him as more of a Hakim Warrick style player, but with less offense. He should be a helpful sub in my opinion, but doubt he could be the answer at the five. Hopefully he surprises me.

I concur 100% and often wonder why we have to inflate players to the level we do.
I hope Sima can play 25-27 minutes a game and that Owens can back him up adequately for 13-15 minutes a game.
If we get 4 points, 3 boards and a blocked shot from him in 15 minutes a night I would consider him to be a success.

Good post. I am one who thinks Owens can make a bigger contribution this year. Ultimately, I think Sima will be the better player. I don't see either having a polished low post move until 2017-18. That said, I do imagine Lovett and Ahmed creating some easy baskets and put-back opportunities for our big men. Owens seems like an athletic, high energy kid that is able to take advantage of this.

I am definitely guilty of extracting this opinion from video and a small sample size. In the end, we'll see.......

Good point on offensive end. I do think defensively we remain vulnerable to being posted up & manhandled by strong, beefy bigs like those "lumberjacks" Creighton rolls out for example. That said, another year of experience for Sima may close the gap a bit & we should have better help defense hopefully.

While I have never been a huge fan of Amar, I think he has the size, strength and athleticism to defend stronger players. He may foul out in 15 minutes but he could be part of the equation. Hopefully this is going to be a running team and conditioning will play a big part in it.

He may foul out in 15 minutes?
He could easily foul out TWICE in that time span

I think Owens will be an energy and disruptor guy for us. It will lead to some good games, hopefully games where we need his output to win. But more often than not it will be stats like RMN hopes for. He did nothing as a frosh at Tennessee, so expecting a huge jump would be a miracle.

If he is on the court for a steady 15min would expect more than 4 pts unless none of the offensive sets go thru him. In that case he should be able to get more than 4 on missed shots and put backs

Not much a miracle if he has been improving and putting on wt

If Sima has only made moderate progress this off season, and if Owens for now, is only a support guy, then I would expect a lot of small ball next year.

What's wrong with small ball and slashers/shooters on the outside? Yakwe at the five, and the rest comprised of Lovett, Ponds, Ahmed and Freud. I expect we'll see that this season quite a bit. Those are probably our five best players this year.

Two years from now, with Sima hopefully making a big jump by that time or Zack Brown on board, then we'll have a contributing center pretty much 100% the time on the floor (or even two centers on the floor at the same time).
