Calhoun got them to win when it counts. He won the whole ball of wax last year despite a .500 BE record. One of the best.
Not suggesting he is not. Already concede that. What he has done at UCONN is tremendous.
But you and I know that matchups, where you get put, other teams losing before you meet them and just plain LUCK play a huge role in winning these things. Remember UCONN never played a 1 seed and only 1 2 seed in the NCAA's last year. The Final Four was made up of a 4 seed-UK, a 3 seed-UCONN, a 8-seed Butler and an 11-seed VCU. Probably the weakest Final Four in the modern era and only the 2nd time since the modern field started in '85 that a no. 1 seed failed to make it to the Final Four (2006 the only other year).
Again that is not UCONN's fault what I am saying is to suggest coaches should not be judged on an entire body of work but rather a handful of games in a 1 and done format is ludicrous.
Put it to you this way. For a 3 year period, 1994 to 1996, UCONN won 3 straight BE regular season titles and the Tourney title in '96. At that point they had established themselves as the dominant team in the Big East. Did they win a NC in any of those years (Donyell Marshall, Ray Allen, Donny Marshall, Kevin Ollie, etc) ? NO. Yet the team last year did win it. Does anyone believe that last year's UCONN team could run with those UCONN teams in the mid 90's over a 16-18 game league schedule? Not on your life.
For the record the 94 team was a 2 seed in the East and lost to 3 seed Florida in the Round of 16. In 95 they were a 2 seed and lost to 1 seeded UCLA in the Round of 8 out West. In 96 they were the 1 seed and lost to Miss St in the Round of 16.
